Pbass respirating hard...what's going on?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when you made the change did you also do a waterchange and if yes did you use prime? doing water changes and not using water conditioner causes heavy breathing due to clorine in the water because if your using a fx5 on a 75 gallon tank that should be enough of water flow coming out, specially since your using such a powerful canister filter on a 75 gallon

good call dvsgp6

my brother is coming over and bringing test strips... I've lowered the water level and now the filter output is blasting pretty good, should hopefully create more oxygen this way... I'm also having him bring some Chemi-Pure activated carbon and a second airstone.

I didn't do a water change, I used 2 gallons of tank water to fill the canister and used a small amount of tap water to top off with, I've never used water conditioner in the past and I've been keeping aquariums for 5 years or more. It's all the same water, minus 2 gallons maybe. I used the same bio-media that was in my AC 110 filter so it should be seeded. Hopefully the test strips will show somekind of results to explain this, otherwise I'm baffled.

Maybe it's time to start...

I'm awaiting the test strips and water conditioner to get here, if there is something in the water, I don't want to dilute it and throw off the reading of the test strips, after my brother gets here with the supplies it'll get a 50% water change daily for the next several days at least...

Sounds like you may be going through a mini cycle. I would bet that your ammonia or Nitrites are high. Ammonia being high isnt so much a problem if your ph is below 7.0, but nitrites are very hard on them even at trace levels. If your ph is above 7.0 and your water is hard, very little ammonia can cause severe stress. Your bio media is alot like your fish. It can be stressed due to lack of oxygen and sudden swings in temperature. Also, chlorine kills bacteria, instantly. So if you have traces of chlorine I would take measures to neutralize it immediatly, and try and find some form of bacteria to reseed your FX5, cause if chlorine got to it, its all dead.

When you notice something wrong with your fish ALWAYS do a water change with prime or another type of water conditioner. You've done the right thing so far with extra oxygen and turning off the lights. Your pbass should be fine..

Here was the course of action I took:

50% water change with lots of de-chlorinator added
Dual Airstones running off one pump
AC 110 Filter put back on for additional circulation
Added one Chemi-Pure Activated Carbon Filter

I think there was too much circulation, I have reduced the filtration to one AC 110 HOB filter w/Chemi-Pure carbon (fresh), and dual airstones running from one pump...
