PC question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was lucky enough to get free Windows software through my school, I take computer science classes and they have a program where we can get stuff like OS free. I had to call and get my old copy of Win 7 transferred to my new computer but the process was really simple and only took like 2 mins.

I also recommend my motherboard if your getting an iCore http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121506 Its the same as the one you picked but $30 cheaper.

Save another $30 with my i5, you won't notice the speed difference with what you would be using it for as. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074 Both are a significant upgrade to what you have now but you probably won't notice the dif speed between the two unless you are doing very high end task.

I notice yours versus my proposed were very close, but didn't notice the savings. I pick this stuff pretty good but i haven't thought about it in 9 months so my brain is a little fried from relearning terminology and researching.

Yeah $60 savings is not too bad, honestly love my CPU. For what I use it for its more than enough so I think the slightly faster one isn't needed. Between the case and the MOBO I have like 10+ USB ports and like 8 SATA. MOBO I have has the same features as the one you picked.

I recommend a new power supply if yours is 300W or less.

Based on what the OP said he really doesnt need anything too crazy, even a standard type of large name brand PC awould easily last him a few years if all hes doing is surfing the bet, using office etc...

I just blew a good chunk of change on a new rig and love it... But then i do design and need a lot of power under the hood...

I forgot that I bought my wife a canon t3 slr for chistmas and since she's a teacher she'll probably start doing a lot more tinkering with pictures so I'm going to stick with a better processor. The best amd apu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106001 is $100 cheaper than the i5, it sounds good but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if I will actually notice a difference or if the differences merely numbers on tests. I haven't looked yet but imagine there are also savings to be had with the motherboard.

The software issue is a no go, can't find windows 7 or office 2010 but did find vista(never used) and adobe creative suite 2 for mac(never owned a mac). I have about a month before I go back to work so I could probably enroll in a class at a local college to get a student discount then drop the class before it starts if I really wanted to be cheap.

HgThe problem with CS2 is you'd be using some seriously old software, considering adobe CS6 just came out...

Now not saying you should go out and buy it right away as i know the original software is far from cheap, but you could look into finding it using other means first to see how you or your wife like it?

I mean the only reason i went with original software is because work covers the cost and is a tool of the trade, otherwise, i doubt i would fork out the money for the original adobe products over the years...

As for the speeds... I guess if you've never ran programs like photoshop and large photo files you may not be able to appreciate the speed of the newer computers...

For example, i used to run photoshop, illustrator and indesign along with a few other snaller programs all at the same time. and when i opened the larger files on my comp it would start slowing down to the point where moving an object would take time to load due to file size (700mb+)...

So having more than one open was impossible... Now on my new rig, i can do the same thing with ease, even opening multiple files with no problem... I even tried opening 103 photos each 5mb+ each as well as loading photoshop and it took less than 30sec for it to ve ready to rock...

So again i would base the rig in the needs and how long you would like it to last...

I'm pretty sure she doesn't use cs2 or indesign anymore but she'll want to use photoshop and she's horrible at closing stuff she doesn't need open. It may be to my advantage to buy the best that we can afford just so I don't have listen to her complain, that would be well worth the extra $200 that my proposed build costs over a cheap entry level pc.

^ now that feeling i know, i got my g/f a entry level laptop to save space, she ended up complaining a year later... Ended up just letting her use my rig anyway but with conditions :)
