Thanks for the input. I'll be changing tanks Jan/Feb next year for them. I'll go for another 130gal I think, and keep it african.
I know it goes a little against the norm, but I quite like the subtle colours and simple pantones of the females. I find them quite pretty ...
Line of sight breaks, work very well in my mixed mbuna, alunonocara 75 gallon. As they seem to have pretty short attention spans, "out of sight out of mind" works really well once they figured out what rock is theirs.
So I think I may have Aulonocara hansbaenschi (red shoulder) instead of the jacobs. The male in the pic below I suspect has killed the other male (he literally disappeared and I found no trace of the body anywhere). On the plus side these guys don't get as big as Jacobs (9 - 12cm) and now that I only have one male and 9 females the tank is very peaceful ... Let's see how it goes.
It doesn't quite look like a red shoulder. Being line bred and not being a fish found naturally in the lake, eurekas can have all sorts of differences in color and shape from one breeder to the next. Who's to say if the males and females are the same species? Anyway you can contact the person you got them from and ask what they're supposed to be?
