I have a 75 set up with 2 peacock bass , 1 tiger oscar , 2 bala sharks , 3 redline torpedo barbs , 2 plecos , 1 geophagus deamon.

I can max out everyone except the 2 bass. They should get at least 20 inches long.

My 75 is 18 inches wide so it should be good for a year or 2.

I like a variety of fish and I have a thing for tiger oscars. I also need mop up guys to eat the oscars messy left overs.

I do notice my wild caught brokopondo ocellaris chases the tank raised mono peacock bass. With 2 bass there is aggression and a pecking order so to speak.

Suprisingly the geophagus deamon chases both my bass , and the oscar is totally passive with no aggression towards the peacock bass. I do notice the wild caught bass is starting to stand up to the geophagus as if hes getting tired of its b/s.

I am happy with the 75 , but I plan on getting a 180 someday. I want maxed out monster bass someday.

I will be happy with 1 or maybe 2 maxed bass barring any aggression issues.
My ocellaris reaches 22" in less than 2 years. A 180g to maximize the growth on cichla?

better add a another zero to that. There's plenty of examples of pbass in 400-600g tanks, and they are nowhere near their full potential.

but it seems the 2 ft mark is around the average.

Doesn't it make you wonder why that is? In captivity, and in the right size tank, Tems should be all over 3ft, look at JohnPTCs tanks. People always complain that pacu and oscars are kept in tanks too small and are therefore stunted. It's the same with cichla, just on a larger scale.

^^^ Awsome monster tank

I meant 2 ft average for the other species , Tems not included.

Sorry , my bad.

Tems are just out of my league.

id get a mono if you can find one..but oce is good to get to..but start out with 5 for a 75 gallon for a couple years then move to like idk 125 gallons..

Have you ever kept cichla?

min tank size is 8x3x3 i believe thats a 300..but 4 me since i am raising tems i'm going huge 8x4x3..but back on the topic 75g i would use until they hit the 10'' in mark..you always want the width wide enuff for them to move around n no feel cramped..schools of 3 or more pbass is always good..they do better in schools..good luck and hope to see some of your future cichlas if you choose to hop on into the cichla world..

sounds like a killer tank, I plan on having this tank for a few years....I'm interested in having a maxed out shoal with some aggressive actions in the tank.....I guess having Peacock Bass are out of the question right now lol I do plan on getting a bigger tank, but I don't wanna get them & something happens when there a big size & I may not be able to afford a bigger tank. Can anybody recommend any aggressive species that I can get a shoal of & max out in a 75?? PLEASE don't say RBP's...I had 3 & hated it lol

Thanks ^^^

As for what you may like....Thats easy.

A shoal of African mbuna cichlids mixed with some peacock cichlids (not peacock bass) to break up the monotony.

Make sure you introduce everyone at once. They establish their community very quick. Once they do, any new members will get tortured.

They are very aggressive , lots of action , nice colors and will never out grow your tank. You will be entertained by these guys. I know because I had them for a couple years.

The only downside is they do not grow into monsters like cichla.

I'm into monsters and now I caught the cichla bug. I guess I got CREAMED.

If you need monsters with an attitude and the mbunas don't cut it for you then heres the options. Dovii , umbees , butikoferi , red devils and managuense are your heavy hitters of big nasty cichlids.

Doviis can get to 30 inches (males) with umbees reaching 24 inches (males). Females get a little more than 1/2 the size of their male counterparts. You will have beat looking fish in that type of community if not murders.

Pound for pound butikoferi are the meanest and baddest cichlid. I had 1 once that wiped out my entire cichlid community of 8 fish in 1 night !!! Be careful with that 1 or you may wake up to a mass murder of torn fish like I did. To make things worse he was a new fish introduced to an established tank where he was at a disadvantage.

My wild female umbee was murdered by a butikoferi at the pet store I traded her too. She was a very nasty fish herself hence miss mean. See her in my personal gallery.

I also had a group of 6 f1 umbees that shrank to 3 due to murders. I raised them from 1 inch to 6.5 inches. I traded my last 3 for my new community I presently have.

This new community is the best I ever had , by far.

Thats comming from someone who had the mbunas and the big nasty cichlids listed above.

Thanks for the help, yeah I'm interested in a nice aggressive shoal. I was a fan of piranhas & still am, but I want another species as a shoal compared to the loner elong I currently have. When you stated "A shoal of African mbuna cichlids mixed with some peacock cichlids (not peacock bass) to break up the monotony." what are some good numbers to pick these goes up in? I.E 6 Mbuna & 3 Peacock Cichilds also, the butikoferi are they good in a shoal?? I'm going to place my order Wednesday, I wanna get as much info as I can about having a nice aggressive shoal in a 75 gallon tank...
