Peacock Bass/75 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With mbuna there is no real set number. You could probably do 12 mbuna with 6 peacocks at least. The key is to introduce all at once because mbunas are more aggressive than peacocks. Larger numbers reduce territoriality so the more the better. Sort of cuts down aggression and makes a busy shoal.

Also depends on your budget because african cichlids can be pricey.

They are very popular and typically a big money maker for fish stores.
If you get them make sure your ph is up in the alkaline range. They like hard alkaline water with some rift salt.

As for butikoferi they are solitary. Unless you form a pair they will kill each other.

Guarantee if you put 1 with your piranah it will destroy your piranah even if you starve the piranah 1st.

Yeah I'm thinking of the butikoferi now, I just saw some photos of them....they are very beautiful & aggressive, now the hard part is trying to find an online retailer that has them.

Speaking of piranahs I forgot to mention I had a wild caught piraya piranah as well.

It was 6.5 inches and did absolutly nothing but sit in 1 spot , eat silversides and freak out when you watch him.

Had that guy 7 months before i sold him. Very boring fish.

That's kinda how my elong is now he's only 4 inches so he has time, but he doesn't show much activeness, at least right now...I mean granted I have had him for a week but, it might just be me...he doesn't have that "humph" yet. I've been trying to find an online site for the butikoferi but haven't had any luck yet...that fish has really caught my eye now.

Butikoferi are very common and most likely will be at your local store. If not , I'm sure there is a vender on MFK with them.

They are from west africa. They get to 14 - 15 inches. They grow very fast and eat like a pig.

If you get 1 you will end up with 1 fish eventually.

Even if you buy 1 thats 1.5 inches and introduce it with a group of other very aggressive cihlids to a new tank , it will murder everyone. Just a matter of when.

At 1st you will have a great community where everyone seems to get along. Could last a month or a year...if your lucky.

Eventually it will go berserk and on a killing spree where it will destroy everybody...Even plecos.

You will go to bed with a happy looking cichlid community then wake up to a horror show of dead mangled bodies. thats how this guy operates. i know from 1st hand experience.

Now I'm really in love with this fish lol so you think I should get 1 instead of taking that "rare" chance of me getting 2 or 3 & waking up to a slaughterhouse in my tank?? I'm not too sure if my LFS has any, I might over looked them before..but I'm kinda spectic about getting anything from them, after seeing how their RBP tank was kept. I got my elong from http://www.aeaquatics.com but I didn't see any other there.

^^^ You read the 2 links I posted ?

The 2nd link tells about many fish including CICHLA !!

Cool photos of how voracious cichla really are

Yeah I'm checking the links out now...those things are crazy lol, yeah my mind is made up I need one ASAP!!! lol

If you get a butikoferi , get 1 and only 1. You can easily max it out in the 75. They are very smart and they are very personable towards their owner. Its like having a puppy dog in a fish tank. Just don't put anything else in there or there will be an execution of that new tankmate. Even plecos will get ripped to hell.

If you want the nastiest SOB of a cichlid then get him. If you want shoal action avoid him because your guaranteed to have your shoal wiped out.

Bottom line , a 14 inch butikoferi will annihilate any dovii , umbee , red devil , managuanse , black nasty or any cichlid of equal size.
