I think it's about supply and demand, and desire. We all want something different, we all consider the perfect ray to look different. The rarer something is the more it can cost, and the more common the cheaper. Region comes into play. A fish is worth what someone is willing to pay. I know I certainly paid a premium for some rays because of what I perceived as quality. Some specimens are hard to find regardless of price. When you find something you've always been looking for and it is rare, understandably you're willing to pay more. But that picture of perfection, that "thing" looks different to all of us. What I think is quality you might think is junk. What I think is a great deal you could think I was ripped off. It's fickle isn't it? It certainly isn't constant. You think of economics and scarcity greatly increases value. If you can come up with a new look. Or a solid example of quality in a sea of average, you'll get to the top.
I remember years ago thinking brown rays would never sell for more than black rays. That was sure wrong. Boes prices are sky high, largely because they are newer and somewhat scarce like BD's were 10 years ago. Elite BD's can still fetch equal costs but only the nicest ones because there are just so many specimens being produced and they are readily available with decent quality. Any boes is going to draw top dollar no matter what it looks like. I think that will change over time and people will grade them and adjusting pricing like we saw with BD's. You see this starting with pearls with 5 stars, chain links, and white base and albino, all kinds of shared terminology and pricing based accordingly.
I think humans get bored, and we always want something new. There aren't new species being discovered and exported anymore, thus the draw of the elite hybrids and morphs. The process of producing elite hybrids makes lots of subpar specimens that flood markets, this is where the debate really heats up. This makes the pure lines rarer again causing them to rise in price as they become harder to find. This has been interesting to watch the last few years.
I love pure and hybrid. I don't raycially discriminate
