Lets see here...Now mind you this is a big river that has nothing but river rock. Almost 0 sand...They were calling me an ahole, yelling I was going to cause irregular erosion, and this is the kicker I found funny....I was endangering native habitat!!! They demanded I put the rocks back where I got them etc etc. I loaded them into my trunk and peacefully drove off.
I was carrying a large piece of driftwood to my camp site and a drunken southern lady asked me if I was sucking eggs. I am still trying to figure out what she meant by that.
I could see the erosion issue if it wasnt rocks on top of rocks on top of rocks. Im just glad I kept my mouth shut for once!

Just a few rocks isn't going to cause irregular erosion. If you filled the bed of your truck, then yes, but a bag won't do much. I collected some rocks from Rhodes, Greece and no one said anything. Munich security might have thrown a fit if we didn't bypass it due to a late flight, but that's about it.
What's really fun to do is if someone tells you to put back what you found and you pull a partially decomposed, 3 foot long catfish carcass out of a burlap sack and hand it to them. The screams never get old.
Haha there are some crazy people out there. I have a friend who is a logger and they cut down trees for the forrest service trying to prevent more dead loss due to Bark Beetles. He tells me of stories where people chain themselves to trees in front of his tractor trying to (Protect the forrest) little do they know that if he wasn't there then there would be more damage. These people are just flat out crazy and logic never seems to cross their mind. This is what im talking about............

but if they want to cry about irregular erosion they should be stopping boats that speed down the river... my family has property on a river here, when boats speed by we can watch chunks as wide as a foot crack and fall off the sand bar.
a few rocks will not harm anything, i take driftwood from the river near me all the time. never been hassled but if there are groups of people on the rivers beach here its one of 3 things...running there dogs, getting drunk, or bums.

In the summer time it is drunks and ppl floating the river. If it was then...I would of been laughed at not hassled. I live in a huge hippie town. I use to work at a lumber mill and they would protest outside of it. At the high points of summer 120+ truck loads of logs would come in on my 10 hr shift...they really got all wacky about that. I always TRY to keep the peace. If I felt threatened I would of had them meet my dog when I tell her to "get em"! They would scatter like cock roaches when the light comes on!
