Petco guys

It depends on the store and its managers. The mangers are who hire the people who care for the fish. Give us some slack, the average fish customer in a big chain store is noob who wants to stay that way or someone who could give two ****s if the fish lives a happy life or not. Forgive them if they treat you like you're stupid, I've had to stop people from doing really retarded things. The rest of the customers are great and actually care about the fish. All in all, why take advice from some stranger that feeds fish at a pet store or a walmart? Check your sources, always. Some will know what they are talking about and others not so much.

+1 to this. If people actually did their research, problems wouldn't happen when LFS and corporate store employees suggest stupid things.

We're not all stupid... just some of us are.

When I was a kid we had 3 locally owned shops to choose from. Now we have Petco and a fish/pond specialty store that opened up 8 years ago. I go to the LFS for advice and rare fish, petco for food and cheapie common fish, and purchase supplies online- both shops are expensive, LFS wanted $250 for a danner mag12!
I have gotten some good advice from the petco people, but when Sally comes over to bag your fish from the grooming station.....

its all on the managers and employees...having worked for the company, and knowing some of the sales people and a manager... they knew what they were doing when it came to fish and lizards, etc. they also had personal interest in it though as well. all depends on the workers. period.

nice thing with LFS's, is there usually privately owned, and USUALLY (at least i would, owning my own fish/reptile business) is knowledgeable staff/owners. prices just arent always the best on supplies and equipment.

i especially hate when name brand stores rundown the great family owned buisnesses

Sucks.. one of my favorite lfs's that I traded and sold fish to all the time shut down last year. I don't like my petsmart but do go to petsupermarket. The staff over there actually know what they're talking about.

I only have a petco near me... the next closest pet store is another petco... the closest real fish store i have is 2hrs away... though i guess i am lucky the main 2 people at my petco like fish and keep several aquariums of their own.

I agree with you guys. I have yet to find a knowledgeable employee at the chain stores. For me it sucks because I have to drive 45 minutes just to get to Petsmart or Petco. MY worse experience was this one employee that reeked of alcohol at he kept following me around trying to talk me. He didn't even know how to read a test kit, or what it was. lol I guess because they use those sticks?? After showing it to him and giving him a basic explanation on how to use it he left me alone. There was a small family owned pet store that was in my town but they ended up closing down. I'm glad about it too! The care and quality of their fish were horrible! I got a few platies from them and they all died within the first week. I should have known better. *shrugs*

i agree. the unsmart peeps there suck. but every once n a while... they have the steal of all deals. ive gotton three inch tin foil barbs for a buck fifty... and three inch clown loaches for less than five bucks. u must do ur own research and know what u want before going in. numb skulls in khaki cant help much. hit the o2 while ur there just for giggles. :):rolleyes:

Sums it up right here. Ignorance and laziness lead to posting about the Petco/Petsmart employees.
