Petco guys

last time I went to a petco, I asked to buy a redtail shark. Guy told me my tank wasnt big enough for one....that was the whole conversation. He never asked me what my tank was and he tells me my tank isnt good enough ahahaha

Man you can't generalize as much as everyone is on here. The truth is that places like this don't care about their fish sections because just having them makes them trounce every LFS so they truthfully don't give a ****. They "educate" their fish associates with a 5 minute video telling you the difference between a "community fish" and an "agressive fish" then let them do everything. The only people who work at places like this who know their **** already knew their **** and thats why they are working there. There are people who work there who know their **** though, there are very few chain stores that don't have at least one of these people, they just have a lot of employees who don't. The people who do know **** are usually the managers. If you're already on a forum like this you should know enough not to have to ask people who work at petsmart questions

Ive delt with petco and petsmart in a few different towns its like night and day. You can def tell the good workers from the bad but i hate seeing them bag up oscars and common plecos to the guy setting up his first tank with a 10 gallon kit in the cart and them not letting them at least know the size the fish will grow to. I got asked to leave cuz i explained to a guy that a Oscar wouldnt live in a ten for long and he asked the employee to put the fish back. Then i explained to the guy a little about cycling a tank and he didnt buy any fish that day but set his tank up right. Seen the guy again a few months later and thanked me cuz he loved his first tank and was buying a bigger one for the Oscars he originally wanted lol

Every PetsMart/PetCO is different. The one in Erie PA is really good, The manager has a ton of fish tanks and breeds a bunch of fish and is active in their local club, and I think some larger national clubs also. Their tanks are clean and healty. The PetCo in Erie is terrible noone cares about the fishand they are usually sick. Some of the PetsMarts in Ohio and Pittsburg are ok but not great. but there are a few nice PetCo's in both cities. You can tell the difference between some one who cares about the animals. While having worked in retail if only the general manager makes hireing descions then sometimes the department manager gets screwed by having yonger inexperienced associates working and sometimes they just dont want to learn and sometimes it takes a while to get them our of the department/store. Dont judge all companies as the same, every store that carries live animals loses them and thats just the way it happens. There are so many ignorant uneducated people that mix oscars with tetras or a large fish with a small fish that sometimes people are just used to people not knowing much and they just try to help, be it correct info or a bit misled. Then again you can always tell certain people that know what they are doing or have multiple tanks if some problem would arise. Always double check the fish you buy and trust your instinct and if you arent sure take that second opinion of the associate. Good Luck

in my area, the one in Chino Hills is stupid. they told this guy that he can have oscars with small tiger barbs and a while back when i was a noob at bichir keeping, they told me i can keep a 4 inch senegal with 6-7 inch tinfoil barbs. seriously all they think about is money and not the wellbeing of the customer and animals

I went to petsmart today they dont know anything the crazy old lady there insisted that my 40 gallon with 6 giant danios was overstocked and she said if i put 4 serpaes into this 10 gallon i just setup that i would overstock it

You just have to filter what you hear from people that work at large chain industries... A lot of them don't know what they're talking about. Some are very informative...
