Petsmart dirty secret?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's interesting to me because today for example, I just flat out flushed 3 living fish from a growout tank. I do this regularly. Why? The fish were stunted. They were never going to grow to a saleable size, I don't have a million tanks I can put deformed and tiny fish into and I don't have the time to wait for a member of peta to find my ad and decide to adopt these guys :p. A fish is really not much different than a mammal but can you imagine the bad name I would make for myself if I was routinely selling deformed or stunted fish? When I have the space in the freezer, I try to freeze culls to death since it is supposedly more humane but that isnt always an option. I can't continue to feed fish that I am not going to sell so it's either flush them or starve them to death, I feel flushing is better.
I understand killing off the deformed fish but if a fish is no different than a mammal, would you drown a deformed dog?

If someone is raising so many animals that their best care is impossible to handle, then they are raising too many animals or need more hired help. There is no reason a single animal should suffer, in the name of profit.

Well the difference is, fish reproduce in the 10s or hundreds, and sometimes thousands per spawn compared to a dog litter of 3 - 6. The deformed and weak ones wouldn't last in the wild, and as it is far more survive in my tanks than would in the wild as well. If I had fish large enough to eat them I'd get rid of them that way but that isn't the case right now.

I hate to say it, but many, many dogs born with congenital defects are killed after they are born.

When you have purebred dogs, the gene pool gets narrower so that recessive traits are the norm. As a result, both beneficial and negative traits become common... such as the typical german shephard traits, but also their predisposition to hip dysplasia.

It isn't just puppy farms that euthanize these poor defective animals, it is respectable breeders as well. The puppy wouldn't find a home (at least no one would pay for it), and if it did, it would have a short and possibly painful life.

Go to the animal shelter and get a mutt... they will most likely genetically superior and healthier than a purebred, and you are saving it too.

And with fish... they have to cull them because if 100 fish from a spawn with deformed mouths couldn't eat properly, they shouldn't have to starve to death slowly.

Regardless of whether you agree with PETAS motivation...methods...fundamental beliefs...ethics...whatever...

The video footage was genuine. And the only thing that creates situations like these is demand.

You have a demand in our society and someone is going to fill it. Basic Economics.

Nothing will change until the money is removed from the equation.

It is a travesty that any creature would be kept in those kinds of conditions.

I think this is somewhat misrepresented.

I think instead of "Petsmarts Dirty little secret" it should be "Breeders dirty little secret"

I can understand breeders having to ramp up their efforts, but with the bigger load and more animals, you just have to make sure everythings top notch for the animal first - its just disturbing.

When an animal comes in to us sick we do everything we can to help it - its not a question of making it sell able, its a question of doing whats right for the animal.

It is taken to our vet on site and then taking into our medical isolation room for treatment. Some of our hamsters (a 10-15 dollar animal) might have just recovered from 200 dollars worth of treatment over a couple of weeks - just to make sure its healthy.

Personally I think our distributors are disgusting people - and for a rare few of them, I don't doubt that this is how they treat their animals.

They're definitely in a better place when they come to us.

I think most petsmart employees generally love pets which is why they work there. I think the store relies on that to make up for what it is lacking. I also think petsmart had the responsiblity to conduct regular inspections for quality and control of any facilities from which they purchased animals but like many before said, the problem is with the breeder first. As long as petsmart is serious about its investigation it hasnt done any wrong yet.
