You know why? PETA. They pressured Petsmart into not selling large birds anymore. This happened a year or two ago(can't remember exactly). Think they've got their targets on someone?

and I'm sorry if I'm seeming like an ***, cause I'm really not :) This situation just enrages me.

Oh yes, you are correct about the parrot thing.

I am against animal cruelty by ALL means, but PETA is just...:screwy:

I have to agree with previous posters, the clorox wipes thing made me shudder. I do think that a lot of bad stuff goes on in those places that could be avoided without losing too much money. From the perspective of someone who breeds as well, I can understand why for $ reasons it isn't always possible to provide the animals with the lushest living environments however, there are more humane alternatives and some things should never be done on the cheap, surgery for example.

It's interesting to me because today for example, I just flat out flushed 3 living fish from a growout tank. I do this regularly. Why? The fish were stunted. They were never going to grow to a saleable size, I don't have a million tanks I can put deformed and tiny fish into and I don't have the time to wait for a member of peta to find my ad and decide to adopt these guys :p. A fish is really not much different than a mammal but can you imagine the bad name I would make for myself if I was routinely selling deformed or stunted fish? When I have the space in the freezer, I try to freeze culls to death since it is supposedly more humane but that isnt always an option. I can't continue to feed fish that I am not going to sell so it's either flush them or starve them to death, I feel flushing is better.

Business is dirty. If people knew half of what goes on to get their things into their homes they probably wouldn't be able to live with themselves. Anyone who's seen the movie blood diamond has a small idea of what I'm talking about. That sort of thing goes on in the pursuit of profit all the time. PETA might be radical, but thank god they're out there, doing their best to at least try and maintain SOME ethical standards. Of course, people aren't going to just stop keeping pets, but we should be concerned how our pets are procured.

mmm, if it is real, its horrific.

This happened at an actual petsmart store near me a year or so ago. Someone from PETA was working there, and took video footage and pictures. It got news attention...

And placing the blame on petsmart is kind of lame, not that i dont think they deserve bad publicity. But i work at a petco, and news is spreading around there that rainbow supplies about 15% of petco stores. And petco is supposedly launching an "investigation" into it.

PETA may be extreme, but their tactics work. And if it uncovered this, and helps the cause then its that much less animal cruelty.
I can't find the image right now, but it says "PETA is extreme" and above the caption shows a chicken having its beak "trimmed" in a factory farm.

flushing a live fish is the least humane way of killing them , if you dont have the time to freeze one swift crack to the head or spine is quicker

Yeah flushing is definitely a bad way to go... how would they die - the chlorine shock, banging through pipes, going through a water treatment plant? I wonder how long it'd actually take.

The guy at my LFS takes the fish and chops their head off. That is far too gruesome for me, but it is quick. I luckily haven't had to kill and of my fish, but I suppose clove oil or freezer?

I think it is good that Petsmart doesn't sell large birds... I hated seeing those parrots in wretched conditions; mentally and/or physically. I don't agree with the extremes of PETA, but pressuring a store through threat of boycott is a completely valid approach, and without it we wouldn't have many ways to change our commerce-driven world. Ever try going through an MP or gov. rep?

I may not respect PETA, but in a world of apathy, it is nice to see that some people out their don't just sit on the couch and gripe... they attempt change.

On another note, I read an article where the PETA president was defending her use of animal-derived insulin for the treatment of her diabetes, because it allowed her to further the cause for animals. :screwy:

I would hardly call this method "boycotting":screwy: I know not every Petsmart is great, I'm not naive to reality. But this video has NOTHING to do with Petsmart! It is Rainbow. It was just stated above that Petco uses Rainbow, let's jump on their backs now!! I mean they deserve it, right? A local chain I used to manage uses Rainbow, let's burn them down! (even though I would seriously enjoy that, as they are more target worthy of these accusations) Petsmart's name got thrown into this because they are the big dog. They are the biggest chain, and therefore PETA will get more publicity and recognition. As I have said (god I have no clue how many times now :)), this has nothing to do with Petsmart, it's all about power, control and publicity.

Petsmart IS investigating the situation (for those who think they are just shrugging this off), and how is it that I'm not amazed that the president of PETA would be backing her hypocritical ways.....let's make a video about the labs that make her insulin, then blame it all on her!!!!!

i couldn't even watch the whole thing. too sad.
