Petsmart ignorance...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
haha no I was just pointing out the look on his face when I got upset with him. Im not a mean guy and wasn't trying to be intimidating or anything. I don't even have any anger issues, it was more of the accumulation of everything I had heard over the years and me not saying anything about it. I admit I definitely could have handled that situation better, and I will next time. He just happened to catch me off guard as I probably did the same to him.

You all must have some pretty lax Petsmarts! Around here, I have seen them not sell a fish almost as often as I have seen them sell one! When we first started out, I bought a couple of African Cichlids. The next day, I took my daughter back to get the SA Cichlid we wanted. The lady wouldn't sell it to us! lol. We snuck back in the following day and made sure she wasn't working. We came out with our SA (which is doing fine with our Africans).

I personally inquired about Pacus and was told that my 150 wasn't big enough.

They wouldn't sell Puffers without a water sample.

I saw a young couple inquire about Pacus once and the gentleman working that night told them every single bad thing about Pacus and convinced them to head into another direction. By the way, the tag on the Pacu tank here clearly states "Up to 24" (which I realize is still conservative...but at least they put something!).

Another time, someone was inquiring about a $60 EBJD. The kid working their told the guy that a LFS had them for $24.

I don't advise using Petco or Petsmart for anything besides Community fish though. With their Cichlids, most tanks are labled as "miscellaneous".

To the OP, nice job on stepping in and helping out.

I agree on the lfs thing. I love my lfs's in my area, and they all know me. lol I was just at petsmart because I was looking for some peacocks for my mother's african tank for christmas. This wasnt even the petsmart I usually go to. The one I usually go to knows me by name and they are all knowledgeable. Pus they ask me for help when helping their own customers just to get my opinion on things. I love that.

X2---All of the Lfs in my area have my name and #. They call me when they either have a fish to big for them to take in or have questions on a fish that was donated/traded in.. Now I don't know it all or ever claim to but if I don't know, I do research for them. Thanks to MFK and google I do what I can to inform people and the lfs to make the best for the fish in question.

Yeah I know some stores with employees like that. But this situation could have been handled better by me though. I look at it now and I may have over reacted. It was just one of those days and times I guess.

Go apologize to the store employee, if you really feel that bad.

Agreed. That sort of reaction was way over the top. The only thing sadder than the advice given was your reaction and subsequent bragging about intimidating a guy half your size.

Okay so today I went to petsmart hoping they had gotten more jacobfreibergi peacocks in because they are cheap there. I noticed the guy working there was helping a customer with the fish he wanted to buy. I happened to overhear the conversation, on purpose of course, and I heard the customer ask about the pacu. Which of course are on sale for $3.50 each. This is what I hear the employee tell the customer..."Oh those guys are neat, they only get about a foot long and can live their whole life in a 55 gallon." I immediately whipped around and interrupted the conversation. Here is what I said to them both..."I am going to have to respectfully interrupt to inform you both that this fish can reach 48" in the wild, and usually can reach 30" in home aquaria In other words it can become the size of a 55 gallon." The employee turns to me and says, "Sir, that fish does not and I am helping this customer right now so I would appreciate it if you let me do the customer service, that is why I work here." I got pissed. I said "Are you ****ing kidding me? Why dont you go research what you are trying to sell before ignorantly trying to pass off information? Its people like you that leads inexperienced aquarists to dump their fish that were "only supposed to get a foot long" into local rivers and lakes. AND why I currently have 7 pacus, a rtc, 2 clown knifes, 2 oscars, a tsn, and 7 plecos that i rescued. You shouldnt be a jackass to someone just cause you realize they know more than you. Learn your ****ing job!" That was the last thing said and I left. It was kinda funny cause the guy got kinda scared of me when I raised my voice to him. He was about 5' 10" and scrawny and I am 6' 4" and 230 pounds. Needless to say he shutup right away. lol People like that aggravate me to no end though and I know you guys know what I am talking about. :irked:

if some one talk to me like that when he have no knowledge about what he saying ("Sir, that fish does not..."), I would never want to apologize that kind of people ! He shouldn't say what he doesn't know! and I'm pretty sure that guy don't even know pacu is not a kind of piranha !

I probably should have left that out. lol Just my observations at the time. I just might go apologize tomorrow. Merry christmas to everybody though.

Derekp, you're a good man. I just want people to consider how they treat one another.
