Petsmart ignorance...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes us big guys intimidate without trying... haha it just happens naturally :D

Honestly, I think all of us fish keepers should avoid Petco/petsmart etc before there are no more local/small pet stores left out there and the only ones still in business is them.If i want a fish I can't get or need a filter, heater etc in a bind i'll drive way out of my way and even pay more just to support a "mom and pop" store.I would hate it to see no more local fish stores and only see petsmart or petco.I sell fish and can pretty much get whatever fish I want but I still buy fish from LFS here and there if they have something I want for my tank or as i said, parts, filters etc just to do my part in helping them stay open.I still love to go to Shark Aquarium after all these years also.I've been going there since I was a young boy and still will buy fish from there. Can I get it cheaper? Yup~but I think George is a great guy and helped me become the fish keeper I am and gave me the advice I needed as a kid that you mentioned. And I don't forget that. When I was a kid and I told George I was buying a pacu he would give me the truth about its size and how big of a tank I need etc.Not lie or just make stuff up like a Petsmart or Petco worker who is clueless and send me home with my 5 gallon brand new un-cycled filter, heater and set up and a pacu that dies from the uncycled tank or if it by some miracle lives, outgrows that 5 gallon tank before it even gets put in it.The fact of the matter is,I think 98% of the people out there including quite a few here on MFK still think a 55 gallon is a "big tank".And if we didn't learn it here on the forum about proper tank size/fish etc we may never know since who do most go to anyway for their info?Petsmart or Petco. And they are taught wrong from the get go.So do your part and stay away from them and drive a little further to the mom and pop store where you may actually get some knowledge and learn proper fish keeping.Just my 2 cents...
I might add also ~ This includes food as well.I'll go right past Red Lobster or Outback etc and go to a Mom and Pop restaurant. Why make the rich richer?Red Lobster?Outback?Olive Garden?-nah I'll go to Mom's fish place or mom's steak place,Mom's italian restaurant etc (made up names but it gets my point across)

Derek I have been to the Petsmart in San Marcos, not impressed with the employees working there. I worked at petsmart too, and some of my co-workers have given bad advice. I give them advice and let me learn as they go. We cant change it all at once, but we can teach one person at a time.

^^ i'd sure like to support a mom and pop store more, there's only one good tropical store near me, and its about a half hour away without traffic - bought my delhezi there though :) probably will head back after i get home for christmas

there should be a law providing all this info on fish, like a chart or a booklet on the species they sell @ every pet shop. Also about any other animal sold there...Most employees (and I say most) because there are many who know and inform well, don't even know about crabs! well cone pal...

i applaud u good sir!!! i was sold a pacu with a 10gal 7 yrs ago... he now live in a 200gal and has cost me more than any other fish i own, i own 3 arrows and 2 gar, along with my personal fave the achara catfish and albino bicher

I just wanted to add...please don't take it personal if you aren't near a local fish store and Petco or Petsmart already pushed them out of business in your area.I also know a lot of people on here may be too young to drive etc.If that is all you got around your area...it sucks but what can ya do?Spread the knowledge and talk to the workers if you need to and let them know the info they are giving is wrong.I wouldn't necessarily jump all over them and put them down since that's an easy way to throw knowledge out the window.Instead offer them advice and give them the knowledge they need in a friendly conversation.(that is if they do honestly care and it isn't just a "job" to them)

I have plenty of lfs's in my area and I absolutely love them. I will always support lfs regardless if I like the chain stores or not. I just went to petsmart cause their peacocks are on sale for a limited time. Im always looking for deals. lol

Well, depending on the LFS . I only have 1 LFS near me that sells fish way overpriced, so i'd rather go to petsmart.
that sucks and is also usually the case unfortunately because they have to survive and make up the money they lose because of good 'ol Petsmart and Petco who have the billions to spend.Sad...
