petsmart vs me

I bought 20 neons at Petco no problem. They did ask me if I was trying to start out a new tank with that many fish and I just told them my tank had been running for years and had already cycled and they were cool with it. I appreciate them asking questions because I have been around plenty of dumb customers that are trying to buy things they shouldn't be buying. They should use some logic though when you say that you are putting them in a 125 gallon. That is obviously more then enough room for that many small fish. Three fish at a time per tank just seems ridiculous.

Ive been harassed by the lfs people before, usually its because they are so used to dealing with the typical, oscar in a 15 gallon type of owner, that and probably didnt even know there is a difference between adding to a small tank and a large body of water. they are commonly book taught if they get that much training. no need to cause a scene, take your business elsewhere but let the manager know why.

I get what they are trying to do but it's very aggravating at times and I just don't want to deal with it so if I get a question like that I always say 5000 gallons and they just look at me like wth are you serious lol I just nod my head haha cause I'm not in the mood to explain this and that when I already know what I need and what's okay the other thing to do is go in and tell them you want a certain fish by its Latin name and when you do that it throws them way off and the questions cease and diciest very quick lol....the last thing I want is to have to answer a 10 minute Q&A cause employees don't know anything

just don't answer them when they ask you what you're going to do with the fish. easy as that.

When they ask questions, tell them its none of their business.

You're their to buy their products, not be interrogated.

I hate my local Petsmart. I once walked over to the aquatic section to listen to the guy there tell a young high school aged woman that her 29 gallon tank wild comfortably house the 4 balance sharks she wanted, but the betta she wanted would be mean and aggressive with every single fish it lived with and would likely kill her other fish. I stepped in to correct him and after talking with the young lady for a couple minutes, the guy disappeared and reappeared 2 minutes later with his manager, who basically stepped between me and the young lady to "politely" talk me away from aquatics. When I told him I had no intention of leaving because the guy didn't know what he was doing and was going to ruin this girl's fish keeping experience, the manager basically told me to make my purchase of dog food (slung over my shoulder the entire time) and leave. Great part was that the girl chased me down in the parking lot and asked me 10 more minutes worth of questions. I pointed her to a LFS that was closer to her home with a mom and pop type staff who actually knew what they were doing.

Petco has been great for me locally. The guy and girl who I always see in the aquatic section both are hobby keepers who know their stuff. But I have also encountered several other terrible Petcos.

I think that many big pet chain stores who sell fish simply don't know what they are doing. Yeah, you get the occasional employee who knows their stuff, but those employees are few and far between. I avoid purchasing any live fish from big chain stores as a good rule of thumb from my experience. I may pay more at mom and pop style LFSs, but the quality of fish and the help I get both tend to be worlds better.

The problem with this thread is that there are equal amount of people who are upset with the pet store to sell fish to irresponsible/newbie owners.

I am always impressed with the store owner/worker who actually stops people from buying fish the same day they are buying an aquarium...
