petsmart vs me

Heh. This is kinda disturbing. Just for grins my GF and I went to a big chain store the other day to see if there where any deco/chem/misc stuff on sale. While there, I noticed a container full of snails on their little cart. I asked the person if they would sell them to me as I knew what they where doing with them and took a chance that they weren't already poisoned in that little container. The person said no, then turned to another customer and bla bla bla " the gold fish are in there (looks to see where I am and make sure that I can't over hear her) to eat the snails" I chuckled out loud, turned to my GF and said "we should sell our gold fish and koi we have the only ones on the face of the earth that won't eat snails!!" Kinda loud so the whole store could hear me. Long story short I ended up WAY overpaying for 2 tiny angelfish that where the only two in the tank that wernt dead/dying. Still in qt and one still not eating. Chain stores are the worst place to get livestock IMO. Good for tank sales and clearance, but that's about it. But also a bias opinion as the lfs I went to sold me a full stock list to cycle a tank with, and I only lost one cardinal tetra to what looked like bloat... After the tank was cycled... Water changes every other day work miracles.

Haha great story.. I had a chick (maybe 30-35yrs of age. I was about 27 at the time) try and tell me stocking my 180 the amount of fish I wanted to buy would send my tank into "shock".

I am not the type to bite lip my ever. So I politely told her I knew more then she did, I was about to buy 100$ in fish and I'd give her 20$ to just not talk to me.

Needless to say she thought I was a A-hole and sold me my fish.

When they ask questions, tell them its none of their business.

You're their to buy their products, not be interrogated.

Simple yes, no, or my favorite.. Get away from me.

Pick one and see how far you can go! Always fun.

Q: Do you have water in your tank?
A: No
Q: what size tank are they going in?
A: no
Q: what type of fish do you have?
A: no.

Or every question they ask answer it with a question, preferably the same question they asked you.

Q: Do you have a tank?
A: Do I need a tank?
Q: What kind of fish do you have?
A: What kind of fish should I have?
Q: What size thank do you have?
A: What size tank do I want?

Hahaha fun fun.
If you have kids get them in on it too!

Every time they ask I just say "oh man, which tank? I've got over 500 gallons worth. How about you?" Normally, the lfs guys around here like to shoot the **** about their tanks/livestock.

sorry to make a thread and not answer back for a while with so many people giving input.

As a over view of what yall have said. I am glad she asked about the tank, normally they just net fish or ask and say ok, I just wish they were more knowledgeable about fish keeping. I also think I started off on a bad note because I had to ask for help (nicely) at the front desk. I believe she came from small animals where I think she was cleaning cages.

Not trying to completely knock the chain. this one wasn't my normal one to go to. The one by me is a lot better with customer. I also did mind my words and didn't try to be to big of a jerk but I might go back (not with the full intent of starting something) to get some for fish. If they try to do this game again I will quiz them.

You have to understand that they deal almost strictly with beginners and the first thing beginners do when they set up a tank is cram it full of fish so we typically try to ask before selling them fish because we don't want the fish to die and we don't want a cheesed off customer (who will blame the store before themselves when big mistakes are made). It's the stores that don't ask the questions that have the worst customer feedback because the customers will blame the store for selling them too many fish or too many products. Just lie about your tank size if you're confident.

I guess this is where the OP and many experienced keepers get frustrated. Myself and many keepers aren't bothered by a few questions. I personally am happy when they do ask questions. But there is a line between experienced keepers and beginners where too many questions makes experienced keepers feel like they are being treated like beginners. And of course there are the employees who question you when you tell them you are experienced. If I tell an employee I have over 300 gallons of tanks running, I want them to just bag my fish and be done with it. They can ask me about my setups if it feels like they are asking out of interest, but it gets annoying when they just keep asking or telling you things that make you feel like you are inexperienced and your judgement needs to be questioned.

Yeah it's a double edged sword. I went into a petsupermarket to buy a large cichlid and told the lady there what size tank I had and such and how long I've kept tanks but she kept telling me all this stuff I obviously already knew and that's where it gets annoying. Depends on the employees.

I also had a customer in my own store come in and want 5 bala sharks and after I asked the lady what size tank she had and she snapped back at me saying her tank was a 55 gallon and only had 20 other sharks in it and that she knew what she was doing. O.o It's a scary hobby sometimes.
