Petsmart :(

I am gonna give this a little bump as the same thing happened to me today. I've got a trio of green sunfish who are looking a little more lively after disease wrought havoc on my tank. I figured a few little fish swimming around would be a good judge of how they are recovering, so I went to Petsmart to pick up a few zebra danios as food. After she asked me what size tank I was putting them in (125g) she seemed ready to net them for me. She said that they would appreciate the large tank, and I said probably not for long. She then climbed down and refused the sale, with the exception of "feeder" goldfish and rosys. I didn't bother arguing, mainly because of my own lack of solid knowledge on health issues associated with goldfish, but thought it would make an interesting discussion on here. I'd also appreciate any links to info about the health issues associated with feeding goldfish vs other fish. Is it only Cyprinids who are bad for fish health? What is the best "feeder" fish?

get a pair of convicts and feed your fish the fry

i cant belive it same thing happend to me too last week, i asked for all your feeders, only like 40 then i said well throw in some neon tetras, she refused and told me "i cant sell you pets" PETS!?!?!? WTF?!!??! SO YOUR TELLING ME THAT GOLDFISH ARNT PETS??!?! wow.. classic racism.

same thing for me, went to petsmart...no guppies...the lady seen me look at the empty guppy tank. i asked for some rosey reds and the lady got very agitated and told me to go talk to the manager. i did, he also told me he that he wouldn't sell them to me. they told me that they would remember me and if i asked for some rosey's another time they wouldn't sell me any fish at all!?....ever...

You people need to get over yourselves...Petsmart/Co is saving their ass from the likes of PETA and other crazy groups. Why in the hell would you tell the employees you're buying the fish for feeders if you already know (from this thread) that they can't sell you "pets"? Just say "I'll take 20 of those" and smile.

I love how people antagonize employees and then expect to get their way.

well most of us arnt "antagonizing" employeese, we are putting the spotlight on the hallarity of food vs. pet more or less beings vs. non beings. in that case tropical "worth $" fish/animals (i say animals because petco ran out of mice so i wanted a hamster for my snake and they declind me.. what makes that hamster so superior over the mouse?") beat others. typical human thinking.. Trace history back and you will see were i am leading too, but whats funny is humans are supposed to have gotten more civilized and smart so to say, but yet we only have evolved to take some of the hurt off of our own species and put it to animals.:ROFL::ROFL:

hmm never had this issue, but then again I only buy what they consider pets, breed them and take the babies as feeders.

would be quite expensive otherwise to buy 50 fish at 2$ a piece every other week.

petsmart isn't so great... they recommanded a needle fish the length of a 8 g aquarium for a 5 gallon aquarium...

Sorry about my above post if it came off as grumpy. I reread it now and I sounded a bit like an ahole. Seriously though, just don't tell them what you're doing with the animals and you'll be fine. A lot of this all comes from PETA and similar groups going after them for anything they can because they're a corporation.

But yeah, I agree with yogurt - get a small tank and breed your own guppies or convicts, after a month you'll be well stocked.
