Imagine living in a place where you have petsmart and 1 other LFS that rivals a homeless shelter in cleanliness. Thats my world
petsmart and petco are the only 2 with any stock of freshwater fish . and if you want anything other then guppies and oscars i have to drive 2+ hrs

Great read. Breed your own feeders and only buy from either store if there is no other option. Convert your P's at 8'' and shrimp will more then surfice as a staple. You can even stuff the shrimp with pellets. But great read from all point's of view.

glad I have someone on here with me separating fact from fiction,Packer. Petsmart and Petco are by no means perfect but there are people in there who know what they are doing and who are trying to make the companies better.

It's probably different at every location but with my supplier we can send them back if it's ridiculous enough.

I am enjoying this way too much. :) Any other beef anyone has with petsmart/petco that myself or someone who knows can help you out with?

On every other animal we get we can, because they look at them before putting them in quarantine. We can tell the supplier were not taking them. But not fish, sure we could call and tell the distribution center some fish came with Ick or HITH but by then were already charged. Most of the time, they come in fine. I haven't seen anything dead or etc. Usually it's 5-7 days later when if they do die they will.

It's a hard business with Petcare, if a hamster for example gets sick. We have to send it to a vet. Spend $22(a total guess, but you get the point) to get the hamster healthy then sell it for 14.99 plus if it dies in 14 days we will refund it. I'm glad we take all of our animals to the vets even the small critters if they get sick, but it's not easy to make money in Petcare.

We are the Petsmart/Petco regulators!!! Watch out!

I'm the Pet Care Lead at my Petsmart, so I handle the fish orders personally. If I am accepting the fish and one looks bad (which is pretty rare, our distributors are pretty decent), there really is nothing we can do about it as far as sending them back. If fish need treatment, they go into the quarantine tanks and come back out when they are fully healed. Petsmart isn't bad, but you have to keep in mind that it IS a corporation. My coworkers LOVE pets and want the best for all of the animals that we sell, and even if they don't know every single thing about every animal, they always find someone else in the store who can answer any questions/concerns someone might have. At least in my petsmart we have extremely knowledgeable petcare associates, so I also felt the need to defend the petsmart staff that DO know what we're talking about. I love my job and I know from first hand experience what it's like to go into a petsmart and know that the fish/other animals aren't well cared for or a store that has clueless/ignorant/ridiculous employees, but we aren't all like that.

:iagree: Glad to hear there are others like that. Even though I'm not running that department anymore everyone comes to me with all questions. No one is perfect, especially some of the people on here. Being a member does not bestow fishy omnipotence or there would be a lot fewer questions asked. Stop acting like working at a chain makes one a second class citizen. The only thing worse than the ignorant people who don't know the basics are the idiots who refuse to learn. Being one of the first is acceptable as it can be temporary. The second is an inexcusable and lifelong stupidity. And yes, it is policy to not sell feeders. We sell comets and rosie red minnows not feeders. You are not supposed to call them that and anything requiring live must be fed during non business hours. Just get over that part. Besides, feeders(goldfish) are probably the worst food to feed, no matter where they come from.

People get so mad, but in all honesty, Petsmart employees are allowed to refuse ANY sale that we deem unfit. I refuse sales every single day. People try to put Oscars in 20 gallon tanks and pacus in 30 gallon tanks. Even though a lot of Petsmart workers don't know anything, it's really, really unfair to the ones that do to say that "99% of Petsmart workers don't know what they're talking about." There has to be a point where Petsmart/co workers are given a break, we can't run the store alone, so no store is going to be perfect. Trust me, if I ran my store and made all decisions regarding fish treatment, fish feeding, water quality, etc.. TRUST me, my store would be a completely different place. While I do disagree with most of the policies, procedures, and information that Petsmart distributes, my store is extremely good at picking up the slack that the company lays upon us.

when i bought my pacu's from petsmart the lady couldnt guarantee them because i was going to put them with my blood parrots, which were i was told "african cichlids":screwy:
