PH question and EBJD breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do you ever have any PH issues or hard water?
I was noticing the stones in your aquarium.
They look to be lime stone or sand stone.
This can inhibit breeding.
I would replace them with granite, or slate.
Maybe even a sand bottom.:D

Of coarse, I would wait to see what they do for now.

Although for the most part I've been using the same rocks in my tanks for many years now(including when my EBJDxJD pairs were breeding like rabbits) I did start this thread because water readings I had taken. I've always had hard water, but when I originally posted it was unusually hard even for my water, and my pH seamed very low(around 6.5). Could these conditions have anything to do with the possibly sandstone or limestone? Wasn't sure in which way they would effect the pH and water hardness?

Sedimentary rocks are comprised of anything, Which can permeate the water. Making it hard.
Lime can raise PH, But other elements can lower it. This is why I use granite, Slate, Or down here, Flint.
They are harder, And don't dissolve into the water.

As requested, here are a couple pics of the ridiculous nests my wild-type Dempsey pair have made in the last few days! Lol

I know! Wish my EBJDxBGJD pair would start something like that!! So bizarre....they're night dwellers now I guess. Completely shy of the lights during the day but as soon as I turn them off, they come out and start monkeying around lol....should I try leaving the lights off for a couple days?

Update-----Welllll....I have high hopes! Just picked up 3 female bgjd's that I had given to my brother as babies over a year ago and forgot about. Now at 3"-4" i just added them to the tank with my EBJDxBGJD "pair"! Honestly, it was like some thing flipped a switch on the tank! Alive again! Female has been bullying the new females around quite a bit in between guarding and flaunting at her man! Fairlu sure her egg tube is starting to drop already also! Soooo....once again, fingers crossed!!!!! Thank you again everyone who has helped! Especially you, JillieFish! Don't wanna type too soon, or count my dempsey's before they're hatched, but never coulda done it without you!!!

Those new females are stunning! No wonder the original female is showing off to her man....she doesn't want one of these hot young things to steal him haha! Good luck and hopefully they spawn soon!

Well I'm not sure but I think this little Sheila might be stealing the heart of my male! Caught them doin the love dance in the middle of the night, then this morning she seemed to be manicuring one of the flat rocks in a cave. If I'm correct, I'm not sure how she held her own against the female that was already in there at about twice her size???

I'm not sure if this will work, but here's a short clip of a pretty serious battle that ensued this morning. I believe it's two of the new females I added competing for dominance. Unfortunately they've roughed each other up pretty good.
