I've never had these fish before but I have read a good bit about them. I saw some tiny ones a couple of weeks ago in the local PetsMart and couldn't pass them up. I brought three home and put them in my 90 gal. I intend to keep the best one (male hopefully) after they grow a bit. I know the chain stores can mislabel or have hybrids...I am curious to know if those of you familiar with them think these look like legitimate baby Jags. Anyone else have experience getting fish like this from a PetsMart?

(I appologize for the pic quality...I need to work on my fish pic taking skills)

awesome tank setup.. i bought one about 2 weeks ago, about an inch and a half long as well. he changes from the colors yours are at to almost all black all the time. im hopin he hops up pretty quick too in my 90 as well.

Thanks. I am wanting to add a few more fish in there in the next week or so so I put in all the rocks to provide hiding spots. I just need to decide exactly what I am putting in there.

The largest of the Jags is definitely more gold colored. The others are darker...not sure if it is a size thing, male or female thing, or if they will always be different. Where did you find yours?

your in for some fun... had mine from 1inch to almost 5 years 9 inches now

I'm looking forward to watching them grow. Do you keep yours with anything else or solo?

Yeah, definitely. I was under the impression that a Jag and maybe one or two other large CA cichlids could live in there, but I eventually want to keep 6 or 8 of the CA's so I am planning to upgrade to a 240 at least within the year and turn the 90 gal. into an African tank. Are you saying the 90 would be too small for even the Jag solo at as an adult?

no, but there mean so watch wat you want to keep with it. mine is just as bad as a pirahna if not worse eats dozen goldfish in in less then 5 mins flat........gets costly

Cool...thanks for the advice. I know I need to get similar sized cichlids in there quickly to have a good chance of making it work. I am planning to order from Jeff Rapps in the next day or so...tomorrow if I can make up my damn mind on what I want. I am thinking Trimac, Festae and Carpintis Escondido along with some dithers and a bottom dweller. They would all be small and grow together, then transfer to the larger tank in a few months along with a few new fish. Sound like it would work?
