Picked up 3 Jags from PetsMart...

beautiful tank! i love your set up!

Thanks for the kind words on the tank setup everyone...makes all the work seem even more worth it when others seem to appreciate it.

I am still not sure if the wood would stay sunk on its own...I have it strategically pinned down with rocks and braced against the top rim of the tank. I had to put a rock on the lid as well for the first week. It has been two weeks now so maybe it is saturated...how long does that normally take?

I found the rock at a concrete/landscaping supply company. They bring in natural river rock collected from the rivers in North Carolina and Tennessee. They had a huge selection of awesome rock to choose from for .19 per pound...far cheaper than what a fish store sells it for. I'm sure most of you already know that trick, but just in case someone doesn't it is worth checking into.

Good luck with those jags - you're in for a world of fun! 2nd to last pic looks like some gill flaring action! They love a varied diet and a staple of Hikari Gold. Keep us updated.

I will...and there has been a little gill flaring action going on in there. So far no injuries, though.

I just placed an order with Rapps. I am going to need to upgrade my tank VERY soon! The order was placed based on his advice, though. He said if I grow them out together and upgrade to a 6 ft. or larger tank I have a good chance of it working out. I would not have thought it would work without him saying so, but since he knows a Hell of a lot more about these fish than I do, I am giving it a shot. Here is what I just ordered 15 min. ago for a Saturday delivery:

3 Blue Barred Thai Barilius (dithers)
1 Gold Nugget Pleco
1 Trimac
1 Festae
1 Red Tiger Mota
1 Escondido
1 Vieja Maculicauda
1 Umbee :WHOA:

Add to that at least one of the Jags and the 4 Tinfoil Barbs already here and we should have one Hell of a party!

I know, I know....wish me luck, lol.

All of the fish will be appropriately sized for growing out together.
Looks like I am going to need to sell my other 90 gal. and keep an eye out for a deal on a 6 to 8 ft. tank.

Just an update on the setup. The new cichlids I ordered from Rapps came in yesterday. I rearranged the rocks, added some plant cover and did a big water change early yesterday morning before they arrived. Left the lights off all day and night yesterday, and here it is now. So far everyone is doing fine...some gill flaring and posturing going on but no lip locking or nipped fins. They have been fed 3 times since yesterday morning and all are eating and making themselves at home. Hopefully they will work out the territories and do ok growing out in there until I transfer them to a bigger tank in a few months. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

You can see a few of the fish in the photo...I will work on getting some closeups of them soon. They are still a bit skittish and I need to get better with the camera, lol.

A couple things from my experience. First of all you can definitely keep a male jag by himself comfortable in a 90g for life. Also, I think your set up looks really cool but would greatly benefit from a black background. It would really bring out the color in your fish as well as the flowing reed thingies that look really cool. Just my $.02.
