Pics from the ACe cuda tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got the the tank resealed a few days ago and water tested in today. And all is well. So as soon as I get a stand built and painted, its ready to go.

I am a little nervous about the filtration but I will see how it goes. I am going to try filtering with 2 emperor 400 filters and a couple of power heads with sponges.

Well hope all goes well and I know you will post pictures so good luck!!! I do not know much about filters, but I am taking out my canisters and making a sump with an old pump, the O rings stretch or somthing and the F'ers always leak!

Today I did my first water change with black water expert by kent!! I changed about 30 gallons and instead of treating the whole tank with it I just treated the 30 gallons, and my water did not turn tea color at all, kind of disappointed. but give it a few more weeks and I think I will have a tea color tank looking like BLACKWATER!!! kent extract was 8 dollars, but 50% off.

Hey i was reading more on the black water thing. And I found a web page talking about before almond leaves, people used oak leaves as litter substrate in spawing tanks. For certain cichlids and betta's.

It was pretty informal and explained alot about tannic acids and how they help with fungus and overall health of newly aquaired fish.

It really caught my attention cause I happen to have 5 huge oak tree's on my property.

It said that using almond leaves is fairly new to aquaria husbandry. And has only been used to about 10 years. And before than the leading seller was oak leaves and tannic acid additives made from oak leaves.

I plan to try some out on my next batch of convict feeder babies as a test. Not that the little rats need any help but if I loose them all I haven't lost much.

I wish i would have saved the site. now

If you happen to come across the oak leave site again could you link it to me it sounds interesting and I work on a golf course ;) I can find an oak tree!!!

I tried breeding convicts and it worked but took sooo long for any growth on them I just quarantine feeder guppies, but I will test the leaves in that tank when I see how many and such.

I am stoked about the black water I am using because it says it is strong and will stain the water!! So in a month when I make a lot of water changes I will post some pics or make a thread if the water is tea color.

HEY HYBRID lets see some new pics of the Aces and the tat!!!!

How they doing and have they grown much???

one of the Pbass guys discussed the use of some kinda leaf in his sump. I can't rememeber the site.

my tank's heavily wooded and planted so may be the tanins from there help. Also keeping constant salt levels. PH falls as low as 6.3 on certain days. After they reach a certain size, can be very hardy fish. I'd be careful of leaves from the yard, who knows what kind of transfer is on them.

Hey the leave I bet is a Ketapang leave, I dont know if I spelled it correctly but that is a good leave that in south Am. it helps create the whole blackwater thing.

I did research on it like a year ago. so my memorie is a little foggy.

But I would never use "yard" leaves I am careful with what goes in the tank, but if you can order those leaves and if I rember correct you want the fallen leave that is slightly brown and maybe crisp. You can order them from some spots or maybe pick them from a ketapang tree at a zoo or somthing, I heard someone say he did that.

I bought blackwater expert from "KENT" because all my fish were from the amazon and wanted to mimic the water perfect, and IMO I think freshwater barracudas live better with PH of 7 or lower but that is IMO and there is no facts proving anything.

And I heard that almomd leaves are about or the same tree. Sorry for the mismatched paragraph but its late. tell me what you think,

nice cudas

thanks alot

I need to add some update pics here real soon.

I am currently down to 1 9-10" Acestrorhynchus microlepis. And 2 little 3"ers that I beleive are Acestrorhynchus minimus. Last year was a terrible one for my cuda's.

I lost 3 of the bigger ones and 5 little guys in a 6-8 month span. Doesn't sound like alot but seeing how rare big ones are it would take alot of money to replace them.

Pics soon
