^^That is basically what you were doing to your fish, it just isn't quite as noticeable in fish as it is in dogs, cats, etc (which is why there are so many people keeping goldfish in 1 gallon bowls for years at a time). But I think people are confusing inexperience/misinformation with intentional cruelty......

But hes so willing to not listen to advice that I consider it intentional at this point...

I don't know, if he hadn't been taking any of our advice, then why did he get rid of most of his fish? (assuming he didn't lie about it, which I doubt is the case, but I guess could be a possibility)
But I know I would be a little reluctant too if I was told I had to completely restock my tank.

Ok well hes supposedly taking the advice but he won't get rid of the eel. Hes being selfish and its not fare to the fish. Just because one person keeps it in freshwater doesn't mean its should be. I am sick of seeing this snot nosed little punks thinking they know more. They assume they are right and everyone else is wrong even though a lot of the people have years if not decades more experience then the person.

But you have to imagine yourself in his position; a 14 year old who has had a nice 55g community set up for a few years now, then gets on a forum and is told be hundreds of people that he is cruel, shouldn't be allowed to own pets, etc.. Again, in that position, I can completely understand being a little reluctant to take everyones advice, especially after being flamed by so many people.

Plus, he did say that he found someone to sell it to.

Wasn't necessarily talking about him but some of the other people on the forum. He wasn't talking about the eel though. He wants to keep the eel.

going to have to giet rid of him then what eels stay small enough for a 55
And to answer Snook's question in this post^^: the closest thing to an eel you can get for your tank is a spiny eel.

Some species that would work would be:
peacocks-Macrognathus siamensis
zigzags-M. circumcinctus
lesser spiny eels-M. aculeatus

But if you get a spiny eel, then it is very important that you test your water regularly and never let your parameters get any higher than 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites, and 20-40ppm nitrates. And with zigzags, it is extremely important that you do enough research to be able to easily tell them appart from the two other species of "zigzag", Mastacembelus armatus and M. favus, because these two species both exceed 2 feet in length.

who the hell picks on a kid:screwy:

appearntly doing it on an online forum is allright...

if you guys saw this kid at an lfs would you really say all this crap right to his face? no i'm pretty sure you would try to be a hell of alot kinder

honestly if someone just came up to you and yelling about how you abuse animals wouldn't that make you angry? pretty sure you wouldn't want to take advice from a person that puts you down and says how bad you are

help him but don't flame him

Hey Snook,

Peacock eels are awesome. One of my favorite fish of all time! If you add some sand as substrate you could have peacocks and then think about adding something else to top the tank off.

There are SOOOOO many awesome fish for 55 gallon tanks!

You know what I would have? A partially planted tank with Peacocks (duh!) and masses of small, colorful somethings. Don't know what--because there are soooo many fish to choose from!

What about setting up a species tank with sand and awesome rock work for Shellies?

There are many "mean" looking fish for your tank. Just dig a bit more online and you'll find some.

One of the most awesome fish I have ever kept was a bream and flag fin shiners from when I went fishing. The bream was the size of a quarter when I caught it.

Man, that little bugger turned psycho! It was easy to train to hand feed though. I also kept crayfish with it...of course depending on who is largest, someone will probably get eaten, LOL.

The flag fins are schooling fish and love a good current and a limb to congregate beneath. You can probably purchase them at a bait store.
They are a Florida native as well. They are VERY colorful--the photos online do not do this species justice at all.

These are all cold water fish (not the peacock) so you wouldn't need a heater.

The rest of you need to remember, children are influenced much by the adults around them. Kids take things to heart more than many adults. Children and young adults FEEL things more deeply than you seem to remember.

If someone called me ignorant, my ears would stop listening as soon as that word left their mouth.

If any adult spoke to my 14 year old in such a manner, there would be absolute heck to pay.

this is waht my tank looks like right now. im getting rid of the cat and gar tuesday. im still researching the eel. the guy at the pet store said that it does better in brackish but it will do fine in fresh if i put in aquarium salt after every water change
