pictus go with angels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
simply put - no.

The pictus have large barbles and are very active at night. The angels have large fins and sleep at night, the angels will be constantly disturbed by the pictus swimming around. Imainge someone sitting and poking you all night every night... you would soon get very fed up and want to kill yourself.

Sorry, its a no go really!

In sizable tank, I would say it should be okay. But really, in any mixed species tank there are going to be risks.

They like a lot of flow that is concentrated along the bottom. Consider a couple Korla powerheads. Also some driftwood pieces and tunnels.

Also they are ravenous eaters that grow fast. You'll need to feed them sinking pellets like New Life Spectrum sinking 3mm, or something like sinking hikari food. The sinking food should be put in while you feed the other foods for the rest of the fish. Feeding them at night is more natural, but they are still very active during lighted periods and will come out to eat the other fishes food anyways.

well im looking for something to go with angelfish in a big tank. i was thinking about 15 angels in 180 gallons, and then something else to go along with them. silver sharks?

while a school of 6 bala sharks would be awesome in a 180. I would be worried about the angels a bit. You could always go with the classic massive school of neons.

Seems to be a quite popular combo. Any sp. of apisto will work well. a fancy pl*co would color the tank up. school of platies.

I read an article about a guy who was keeping his angels with Uarus.

As far as catfish go you'll need something that isnt overly aggressive so that the angels dont get beat up. Mystus vitattus possibly. banjo catfish. a dorid maybe.

Oh just looked at my tank. Rainbows would be a beautiful addition as well

Neons will be eaten by the Pictus usually, and if not first by them, probably adult angelfish. I would suggest using large bodied tetras with this combo.

How about a school of Apollo Sharks? You'll have silver spotted catfish on the floor, angelfish ruling the middle height, and the Apollos will stay a few inches from the surface.

i have five angels living with a pictus in my tank, and they are fine. my tank is a 400L, and the pictus seems to live in a cave during the day and swim around at night. the angels don't take any notice of him, and he doesn't take any notice of the angels. if it's a big tank, like you're saying, then i don't see a problem. but if it's a small tank, then because pictus swim around so erratically it could startle the angels who are a bit slow in swimming.

I know that they will be eaten. But whats one or two here or there in a school of 50. :grinno:

IN MY TANK (BEFORE I DECIDED TO CHANGE) I HAD 2 PICTUS AND 4 ANGELS IN MY 15OGALLON. ALL SEEMED OK THEY PICTUS STAYED ON ONE SIDE AT THE BOTTOM AND ANGLES ON TOP. I EVEN SAW MY MALE ANGLES GO AFTER A PICTUS DURING SPAWING TIME.

and id think that bala sharks would be a bad combo with neons? but im down for neons. but id like some sort of semi aggressive fish to go along with either angels, balas, or pictus. i have a personal liking for the black skirt tetra, i have 16 of them right now lol.
