PIRANHA ISN'T EATING AND VERY STRESSED/RAPID GILL MOV.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes if seperated should recover.
Unfortunately, I don't have a divider big enough for the 75 gallon. For now, I don't see them attacking him at all, so I won't worry too much about it yet. I'm for sure going to keep my eyes on them constantly to see if they do any further attacking though. If I do, i'll immediately get a divider.

If you go to a hardware store you can pick up an egg crate light diffuser and cut it to size. Usually less than $20. This is my 180 with 2 pieces placed against each other to go all the way across. One of those which I previously used to divide my 70

Piranhas are very messy eaters as you already know by now, what was said regarding the 50% wc on a weekly basis may work right now that they are small but as they get bigger they will need much more space and more frequent water change in order to stay healthy. As your water deteriorates, the fish will slowly get sick and the others will pick them off one by one. Often when the sick one is attacked by the others the defending piranha will damage the attackers, which creates the next one that will get taken out.

If you keep water clean feed healthy foods and give them ample space to get away from each other and have a place to hide, you could have a nic pack of deadly but beautiful red bellies there. If you don’t do the wc they will grow even slower than usual, which is pretty slow once they hit about 3-4”. As a general rule when I had them lfs would tell me that you need roughly 25 gal min per fish. Knowing what I know now that is still not very much considering the fish’s needs.

Hope it pulls through for you.

Ps if you look in the forums there is a place dedicated to piranhas that folks there can help you out with more specifics on these guys and who also share a love for these guys. Hope this is helpful.

I can't believe im saying this.... my piranha has passed away this morning. I feel so sick right now. I am almost certain it was because of my lousy maintenance schedule (40% per 3 weeks). Another cause could've been starvation, since they haven't been eating well for the past couple weeks or so, particularly the one that has passed away (And for particularly no reason other than poor water parameters). I've been focusing all my power in minataini g the tank as best as i could and keeping the water parameters perfect, but despite this, he passed away..... I guess on the bright side, the other 6 piranhas are still alive and well. Do you guys have any other theories as to what happened to him?

You may want to give them a varied diet with more nutrition in it, in addition to the water change schedule.

If you look in the forums there is a section called “other monster fish” and if you click on that piranhas are the top of the list. There is a sticky in there about piranha nutrition that could be helpful.
