Piranha Tankmate Choices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you probably wont get many people saying tank mates work for P's. Not because it doesn't ever work but because people don't want to get flamed and told sooner or later it wont work. well sooner or later even other p's get eaten because of death or illness.

The best advice is to know your fishs personality extremely well before you even attemp a tank mate.

well said.

My Piranhas all extremely skiddish & shy, they freak out as soon as sum1 goes near the tank, anyone can put their hand in the tank & they just go to the opposite side.

My Green Terror Cichlid is attacking every other fish in my tank & is way more aggressive then the Piranha...that's y i was seeing if it's possible to move him to that tank.

Yes ppl have, for what length of time, I don't know. I don't think ppl get flamed for asking this question which probably is asked at least 2-3x a week. Ppl get flamed for posting picks of half eaten but still breathing fish that they tried to co-hab w/ Piranha. Me personally, I won't try it no need. I'm 100% satisfied with all 5 species of Piranha, 3 species living solitary. Just remember, Piranha my seem very skittish from a human stand point but reality is they will eat other fish if they are hungry and anything you try to cohab is a potential food source.

Yes that is all completely agreeable & I know cuz I tried putting even just a common Plecostamous in the tank with them. Which most ppl wouldn't expect Piranha to touch, but my 3 Red Bellies shredded the Pleco. All that was left was a skull hanging on the filter intake.

P's got me into fishkeeping. Had a schoal of 3 nats for 3-4 years in a 55gal. Transfered them to an 80 with a texas cichlid half their size. The tex stalked them once he realized the P's wouldnt fight. So I seperated them after a couple hours. All 3 P's died from stress.
P's are excellent fish but need to be respected. With that being said, I only keep P's with other P's now. Its not in their natur to "befriend" or tolorate fish other than their schoal. To them its eat, or be eaten.

Well as I mentioned I can't even keep a Pleco in my tank with them, they shredded it 2 days l8er, but at the time I had the 3 of them in a 29gallon tank & they were extremely skiddish.
Now I upgraded them to a 75gallon that's much more spacious for the 3 of them.
I respect my Piranha as much as all 19 of my other fish, I've invested more money in my 3 aquariums, then I have with anything else.
