Piranha Tankmate Choices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I Got 3 Piranha that aren't all I give them, they never eat everything that settles on bottom on the tank. I was wondering has anyone ever had success is housing them with 2 or more Lobster/Crayfish/Snails???

i've seen lots of vids of piranhas chowing down on crays. my very own have eaten snails. i say your success rate is no different then any other potential tank mate. in other words, your chances aren't great

A friend of mine has an 8 inch Pacu in with a school of about 6-7inch, P's......other than the infrequent tail he gets along well with them.

Safe tank mates include:

rocks
sand
driftwood

with this stocking, you should except to see few (if any) losses.

Convic's, are good tank mate's with P's like someone said, you gotta know you're P's personality's how they react with other fish, and figure out what is food and what isn't. My P's have a couple convict's as there tank mates, and the convicts hold there ground with them.

i wonder if acclimating your fish to each other would help? maybe a transparent tank divider...if they dont try and, "om nom nom" your new fish maybe remove it and watch them for a bit and see what happens when they swim near each other?

from my personal experience, the divider trick wouldn't work. For example, i had 4 pairs of convicts, once they paired up, i had to get rid of 2. pet store wouldn't take them back even for free so into the piranha tank they went. it was maybe 3-4 days before the first one got picked off. Then i went out of town for 3 days and the other one was picked off by the time i came back. in this case, it wouldn't have matter if i dropped them in with the cover of night, used a divider for a couple of weeks, scared the crap out of the convicts and red bellies or any other trick method you could think of because they randomly ate them overtime. nothing you could do to prevent or monitor that. i have however had a pleco last 8 months that didn't die until they broke the thermometer and the mercury leaked
