Piranha Tankmate Choices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'm trying a new idea, i'm testing how my piranha will do with 2 common plecos that are 2 times their sizes in the same tank. So far they havn't even gone near the plecos & this times they all have lots of space as well

WOW. My Piranha are exactly the same as most of the ppl that responded, b/c since I put 2 Common Plecos in the tank with them, the plecos arn't touched at all now, the piranha go in the same area but they don't even be near the plecos most of the time.
The plecos even come out of the bogwood when I feed my piranha & they don't even care if they're by them when eating.

Also I guess 1 pleco didn't last in a smaller tank, but putting 2 in a bigger tank with them it's working completely perfect.

I had mine in a 30 gal with a pleco for about 3 months with no problems at all.

How many P's do you have? I heard they get more aggressive the more they are.

Also Is there a chance your pleco just died and they just ate the carcass?

Piranhas are equal opportunity hunters, if it looks weak its dinner, if they are hungry, its dinner. If you have 50 neons tetras in there, a 15 inch pleco, and dont feed them for a week, we all know whos going to go first.

Best bet is to keep them well fed, that means offering them food every day. I fed mine freeze dried krill daily, and my 2 plecos lived perfectly. This was in a 55gal with 9 reds. (ive learned) when i moved them to my 120, i cut down on there feedings and they turned on the pleco. Imo. Ive had my reds for... 2 years this jan/feb but i dont shovel tank mates in there and see who lives. Lol Size really doesn't mater to these guys. I keep them fed with Fish and chicken and shrimp from my local Hyvee.

Anyone has experience with RBP and clown KF?

I have them with a Zebra KF, but he just stay hidden all day in a hollow log, but the clown is much more active, so he might get attacked.

I have 3 RBP, as I mentioned b4 when they were in a 29gallon. They shredded the Pleco & left the Skeleton. These 2 Plecos they don't bother with.

Give em time, they will 'see' it and deside its meal time. Saddens me. lol

The Clown, they are aggressive towards other aggressive fish, but i strongly feel it would become a meal. One bite in the wrong spot and he will go down fast. I had a 16 inch one with a common wolf, he kept my wolf at bay. When my pleco went down, they nipped its tail.

I have a CK but he deffinately aint being put with my RBP.

I tried in the past these fish with no success:

1. Common Pleco 12 Incher that ended up eaten one day when it got to aggressive
2. Exodons - picked off slowly
3. Jaguar Cichlid - didnt stand a chance
4. Pacu - depends on disposition and size.
5. Goldfish - duhh!! these are feeder fish :)

success:

1. Pacu - Big guy 2 footer.
2. Oscar - No issues but didnt get along with pacu.
