Pit Bulls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually their OWNERS should be illegal not the dogs, they didn't get that way JUST because they are a pit or have pit in them. ;)

Exactly right. In the past few years we have had 2 children killed by pit bulls in my area. In one instance 2 pits attacked a boy riding a bicycle, dragged him off of it and mauled him to death after escaping their backyard.

You start with a potentially dangerous animal and put it in the hands of someone irresponsible and disaster occurs--for the owner, the dog, and of course the victim. Pits can be great dogs but they seem to have a procilvity for being acquired by people who have no business owning one, who do not investigate the bloodlines of their particular pup throughly before getting it and/or do not know how to train it. Sadly, a large part of the problem is the deliberate breeding for agressivness that has infiltrated so many bloodlines.

I am sure the folks here have wonderful animals. I love dogs and have always had one but we can't ingnore that fact that pits are illegal many places for good reasons--reasons pretty much traceable to human, not canine, behavior. Congrats on on some beautiful dogs in this thread.

I have to Chime in here, I have been around APBT's for the last 31 years (since a young boy), and as a responsible adult owner for the last 15. I have also had shepherds and dobermans.
Pit bulls are terriers, and terriers are people dogs that will almost never attack. Of course there are cases that prove this wrong, but you will find that most dogs that attack are shephards, chows, dalmations, labs and even retrievers. I have 1 pit bull ( 6 years old), and a bandog (6mnths old/ my first bandog ). My pit is hardly agressive, and the worst watch/guard dog I have ever owned ( all of my pits were bad watch dogs). I had 1 red nose about 10 years ago, that was an really intimidating looking dog (short cut ears about 25 inches tall at the withers), but he was all talk!!! he was a 75lb lap dog..lol....
I grew up in NYC and I will be the first person to say that there are way to many people that own these animals for the wrong reasons.. ie. want to be thugs or gangstas and put 50 lb lock and chains around there dogs necks..
My father was a detec in east NY,(kind f'd area) while i was growing up, our first pit "lucky" was a wreck. Back then, there were more issues with inbreeding, to get physically superior dogs with no brain power. But now its not as bad, but some of these things do still go on.
The point I was trying to make before I started rambling. The most agressive dog, I have ever owned ( towards animals and people ) has been the shepherd, with the dobe a close second.
IMHO, pits get a bad rep because of there history. If you are a responsible pet owner and have experience with dogs then pits are great dogs.
Beleive it or not I actually got my new male bandog, because I wanted a dog with more drive, not as passive, with better guard dog qualities. IMHO, these are qualities/traits that pits do not naturally have.
Just my .02

Also like to add, all of the pits that I have owned have been rescues from fighting rings in NYC. At some point in time these dogs were all bitten, chewed up, and atacked by other dogs. Some even used to train, letting a superior dog attack it, while it cannot defend itself with a muzzle on. One of my dogs was a ringmaster, meaning that he was an undefeated dog with who knows how many deaths under its belt...(sad)
The ringmaster (Deebo) was my favorite dog, with some therapy he was able to get along with other large dogs in about a year and a half. It is a great feeling to accomplish something like this from a so called "killer". to see my 3yo neice riding him like a pony and my 6 mnth old pit puppy chewing at his heels. He would just get frustrated and run away looking for shelter form my eye grabbing, ear pulling neice...lol.
Unfortunately Deebo passed last year with liver, and kidney failure, he was around 6 years old. My vet says that he had a short life span because whoever had him as a puppy gave him hormones asd steriods to pump him up. Very sad. I have some pics from over the years. I will post some later on when I get home form work.

by no means am i trying to flame anyone here, Its just that I spent the last 20 minutes reading and felt I should post. This is something that I have been very passionate about for a very long time.

OMG, I'm so excited!! Ok, one of my boy's friends has a white Pit, she is in heat and they want to breed her with my Rufus!! I get the pick of the litter if we do it. So I may be getting a pup after a while. She is 2 and this would be her first litter, anyone have any advice on how to make this go smoothly??

Make sure you come to an agreement and write out and sign a contract so there is no funny business when the pups come. I had a bad experience the first time I studded my red-nose out to an associate I thought was a friend. Best to be safe than sorry. Business is business.

Yes, good advice...didn't even think of something like that. My parents had a bum deal when they studded out there Rotti, forgot all about that! They were friends too. THANKS! :)

I am a fan of this breed, I love them, I just wish people would stop breeding them untill the numbers go down. Back yard breeding is creating a pit bull geonicide. If you have one, please in the name of humanity fix it. If you want one, please rescue one. I think there is more pits than people in this country now. It's a sad situation for this breed because of over breeding. I used to work for a rescue here in Texas. We are close to passing the chain and teathor law, I can't wait untill this ordanance goes in effect, because this breed seems to be mistreated the most, probably because there are more of them than any other breed. Rescue, dont breed, please for the dogs sake. Thank you , and Nice pics!

They are all very nice looking!! Those pups, how adorable is that!!!
