folks base the dog they want by there temperament, while gold retriever is a passive, smart dog with a drive to please its owners and fetch, doberman are a less agreeable breed, this why they make such good guard dogs, temperament is part of a dogs breed or breeding,IMHO

I would agree with your point but I still think the environment play a bigger role in shaping their personalities .

Its kind of funny when it comes to dogs, people are comfortable using breed characteristics/stereotypes but when humans are involved; stereotypes are usually not accepted.
