The fact is that if you want a dog like a pit bull or any "dangerous" breed you're going to have to put forth the effort in the dog. It won't be fun at the time but it will be well worth it in the long run. I adopted my Shepard from the no kill shelter she was born in at three years old. She wasn't socialized and had quite a few issues Including being unsocialized around other dogs. We put in quite a bit of work and almost had her put down several times but always couldn't do it. We now have a "success story" on the trainers website and a great family member. 
Dogs and kids are both products of their environments. It will take work but you can change their behavior.
That said she has never initiated a fight or hurt a dog badly but has had a few skirmishes that she took sent some fur flying because she thought I was in danger.
