And that's exactly what you have.
Luckily most of the piranha family come from murky or tea colored water which over thousands of years they have adapted larger eyes to cope with darker/murky conditions to survive from bigger predators, but when we bring them into aquariums we tend to light them up like fireworks on the 4th of July! This can be entertaining to the FK & may look cool but to the piranha its like baking in the sun during summer with no sunglasses! They don't prefer it which also means they may want to hide out more to get out of the bright light to feel more comfortable making them less active, not only for their visions sake but also as predators/prey they need to be aware, so that's where the plants come in, they give him tons of top cover and there's only a couple spots where the light penetrates and is bright, IMO this makes him act more natural and social! All together its worth it
In my bigger red belly tank I have no direct tank lighting plus its has black water extract and I can positively tell you that from raising them as youngsters they without a doubt enjoy darker conditions, less aggression, less skittish and more active overall! It may look odd but if odd is natural then so be it when it benefits a fish!

After all we keep them as pets and as pet keepers we should replicate their natural environment as best we can and sometimes that's a challenge in a glass box
Some people put money in their cars to look better, some put money in them to function better/go faster. I've always sided with function before looks, combine them both and your brilliant!
Anyways ill shut up, here's a shot I took tonight of my piranha watching a pellet sink and a guppy going in for the munch, guess gut loading isn't so bad after all!
