platinum RTC?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've seen some pics every now and then, I think the biggest I saw was around 2'. Someone not too long ago had a short body for sale if I remember correctly. Very very rare, basically my dream fish. Doesn't one of the mods have one? Maybe neoprodigy?

i'v seen awesome pics of juvis. these cats really captured me man. kinda like love at first sight... lol. i just cannot find any adult pics anywhere

i never really wanted to build a mega pond, but might just have to now

other day was going through a thread and found Rockygoldy from kaiju arowana in singapore who had this specimen... u might wanna contact them and see... Good Luck

Just yesterday I found a site that said that this is due to some kind of condition, I think amelanism (probably the same as the fella in your avatar), but not albino, no red eye. So anyway they said that in RTC this fades as they get older, so that might be reason for only juvi pic's. There is also a member on here who has a TSN that went white/yellow but it wasn't a small fish and it was bought as a normal colour TSN.

ok can i ask you guys a question y is it that in the fish trade thay dont call them what thay are? it is a lusistic albino. which means it is nothing more then an albino with black or blue eyes. i have never seen one called this it is always platinum. is there a difference in the two or is it just that it sounds cooler lol

iv also wondered the same thing, but just went with it. i dont think these are leucistic tho because they do have pigment

Leucism (occasionally spelled leukism) is a general term for the phenotype resulting from defects in pigment cell differentiation and/or migration from the neural crest to skin, hair or feathers during development. This results in either the entire surface (if all pigment cells fail to develop) or patches of body surface (if only a subset are defective) having a lack of cells capable of making pigment.

Since all pigment cell-types differentiate from the same multipotent precursor cell-type, leucism can cause the reduction in all types of pigment. This is in contrast to albinism, for which leucism is often mistaken. Albinism results in the reduction of melanin production only, though the melanocyte (or melanophore) is still present. Thus in species that have other pigment cell-types, for example xanthophores, albinos are not entirely white, but instead display a pale yellow colour.

More common than a complete absence of pigment cells is localized or incomplete hypopigmentation, resulting in irregular patches of white on an animal that otherwise has normal colouring and patterning. This partial leucism is known as a "pied" or "piebald" effect; and the ratio of white to normal-coloured skin can vary considerably not only between generations, but between different offspring from the same parents, and even between members of the same litter. This is notable in horses, cows, cats, dogs, the urban crow[2] and the ball python[3] but is also found in many other species.

A further difference between albinism and leucism is in eye colour. Due to the lack of melanin production in both the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) and iris, albinos typically have red eyes due to the underlying blood vessels showing through. In contrast, most leucistic animals have normally coloured eyes. This is because the melanocytes of the RPE are not derived from the neural crest, instead an outpouching of the neural tube generates the optic cup which, in turn, forms the retina. As these cells are from an independent developmental origin, they are typically unaffected by the genetic cause of leucism.

Genes that, when mutated, can cause leucism include, c-kit,[4] mitf[5] and ednrb.[6]

i was just saying in serten fish like the silver arrow were you can selectively breed the higher contrast silvers to produce a platinum color i can see this as well as the pic of the tig im guessing it is a product of years or breeding or just realy strong lighting because if you look by its tail it kinda starts to fad out to the whiter pigment but for cat fish i have yet to see a pic that dident just look like a lusy. just my opinion if any of the big time breeders want to chim in id love to here from you and sorry if this is thread high jacking i just thought it kinda fit in here
