Play sand-Home Depot?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't say I'm a hater but the stuff I tried was a mess, I'm woundering if there is different kinds. John said his rinsed easy and the stuff I got was like Mississippi river mud once it got wet and was loaded with silt. The PFS I fugured was designed to be used in a swimming pool filter and turned out to be very clean so I stuck with what worked for me. The PFS is a lighter color then the playsand but once I mixed it with the TMS it looked really nice. My only knock against TMS is it is so fine you have to be careful vacuming because it likes to travel up the tube but mixed I find the PFS helps keep down a little. Either way any of the three will do the job I just found the play sand I bought was filthy.

not sure if it comes in different kinds,i just bought the open bag they had for 2 dollars to test it out. and i love it. my plecos actually come out during the day to play in it they keep it stirred up and so far i dont have an issue with my filters(although i have the intakes pretty high up off the bottom). The play sand actually packs really tight and all the crap and stuff just rollls over it and gets suck up pretty easy. as far as rinsing i just swirled it around in a bucket a little at a time and dumped of the silt until it swirled clean, only took me 45 minutes to do a whole bag.

I used Home Depot play sand in my GF goldfish tank and it works great.

I washed it many, many times though. Then I did a 100% water change, added Tetra's water clarifier and put a quick filter cartridge on my AC 20 powerhead. 12 hours later the water was crystal clear.

well let me tell you their is alot of different kinds---I was lost as hell when trying to buy this stuff....

It's not as easy as saying -I want some pool filter sand please-and think your all good to go.....Tons of varients when dealing with this.....But alot to choose from...

Anyhow the stuff I got is a white and black mix...It looks great with the TMS mixed in as well.....

Anyhow once I get things cleaned up-I will take some pics and post up the results...

Well since I'm fully vested I'll be waiting for the pics. GL buddy.

good luck ,and keep us posted. (i think the key to play sand is rinsing)

I found some PFS and got it put into the tank last night. I bought 300 pounds of it and used 250 pounds and another 100 pounds of TMS.....

Looks pretty decent if I must say......But surely will let the pics speak for themselves.....
