has anyone ever tried to melt glass back together? how hot would it have to be

over 800 degrees probably closer to 1000. i know you can melt glass in a fire (who is a pyro??) but that was just a light bulb and a candle stick.

how thick of acrylic did you use and on what size tank?

also did you just silicone over the damaged area?

CHEERS.

Hi D~M,
the damaged tank that i used a piece of acrylic on was only about 2ft in length,my other half accidentally launched a jar of honey through the air and hit the tank on it's side causing a chunk of glass to fly off and leave a crack with water coming out,i don't know how it didn't just shatter(had water and fish in it)...so, i had some off cut acrylic from my new tank and stuck that there....this was always gonna be a temporary measure as i had another tank about to be freed up....

heres a pic

ok thanks, do you think 8mm will be thick enough because i can get the size i need for £5 a sheet.

also should i place the tank on styrofoam because one side or the tank will be higher than the other?

also what did you use to bond the acrylic to the glass?

I used Aquarium silicone (clear-seal)....but i would strongly urge you to just change the effected glass, least you will sleep better at night not worring about the tank giving way..all the best buddy

Ive seen many tanks repaired with a piece of glass siliconed t the inside. The acrylic piece siliconed on looks like a chip not a crack,I wouldnt try that with anything bigger than a small divot,Id guess he could have skipped the acrylic on that repair

ok cheers.

anyways i have had another look on the site i was going to get the acrylic from its only £15 but then with postage and v.a.t its £40.

and since i am on a very very tight budget pratically nothing:cry: (iam 17 and about to get a car) , i have decided to have a go with the windscreen repair kit and only fill the tank half up and make a open top palludarium, hopefully that will mean there will be less chance of it breaking because of less water pressure.

thanks for all the help from everyone, i will post pics of when its done and hopefully filled with out leaks.

for **** sake......'do you not read all the post'....it got chipped and had a crack ..water coming from crack...my repair was for just 1 week, another tank was freed up so i could get rid of the tank with the chip and crack, the repaired tank was a small tank ,so i could get away with the small bit of acrylic i had, i am not advising anyone to do what i did, i am advising to just strip the glass tank down get new glass for the broken glass and re-bond all the aquarium... piece of mind..
