I've used Melafix/pimafix for years... mainly for treatment of scale-less fish. If you see no obviouse signs of fungal/bacterial infection. I would reccomend a 1/2 dos for precautionary measures. do not raise the temp!.. this is often how people kill their fish when useing these products! Most people Mis-use the product and kill their fish, no where on the "directions" does it state to raise your tank temperatures like many other medications do as well as useing salt, Thats usually where people make the mistake.
But I also agree, no fish can ever be "cured" or "fixed" w/out the healthy building blocks of good water, proper nutrition, and a "happy" environment. Once that is accomplished, I'm not adverse personally to "helping" my fish get better.
Saying you do not need to be pro-active in treatment of a deep wound, imo is asking for trouble. I'de rather low dose melafix/pimafix to inhibit an infection, like slathering neosporin on a bad scrape or cut. Then say "well if he gets obviousely ill then I'll fix it" like Liz stated, young fish are delicate. a rageing infection is alot harder to recover from then a few days in a hospital tank and a lil' extra TLC to begin with.
2.5ML of each Daily for 3 days. WC 2.5ML daily for 3 days... ( For a 10 Gallon tank) Tbh I'de be surprized if the wound isn't healed over well, and 80% better or more in a week. Do not continue treament after that, unless you see signs of infection. If there is then I'de go to a full dose, and consider anti-biotic treatment. I do not remove my carbon, or do 50% WC's daily... I watch my water perameters, allow the fish to be as stress free as possible, and let it heal.
Increasing water aggitation will also help, hence the 1/2 dos reccomendation. Very rarely have I needed to use full doses, and those where when I had a very aggressive form of fin-rot break out.
But thats just my own personal experiances with the product, and what I would do. I will say I have never treated an Arrow w/ this "medication".. and though it may be considered a medication, imo it's more like a "salt treatment" it's not an anti-biotic, or a drug. Its a natural plant extract that has properties that inhibit bacterial/fungal growth. It may not exactly be the same, but I see it and use it much like many people eat chicken soup when they are sick or take extra vitamins.
No matter what you do GL, He/she is a cute bugger.
