Good advice. I am also adverse to medication. I mean, get the water correct, high quality food, extra changes, reduce stress - are the factors we should be looking at. Then a fish will heal up if it's going to. Never understood people reaching for medication bottles. A fish in the wild doesn't use "melafix" or a small course of antibiotics does it?:screwy:

trying to give our fish and other pets the best care available, involves doing alot of things they would never encounter in nature. thats the beauty of having medicine behind us for our pets, we can help fix what otherwise may have killed them.

if we have horses or other exotic/wild animals, should we not treat them with medicines as well if they get injured, since they wouldent get it in the wild?

He should be just fine. Fish are amazingly resilient. When I used to work at a fish farm, I once netted a trout that had obviously been attacked by a heron and had a gaping head wound from it. He was still behaving like he was in perfect health.

Keep the water clean and he'll heal up just fine

Haha, but that is extremely different, the analogy you used. You see there is no evidence that using medications will effectively allow a fish to repair better than just correcting the factors I detailed and letting nature take it's course. Do you see?

not only that, I have seen cases where the addition of meds wipes out the beneficial bacteria.

you try and save one fish and you kill several in your tank because of a nitrite or ammonia spike from the addition of meds.

granted, this is rare unless you overdose, but it can happen.

update: he is eating, swimming, and acting normal. i am praying to the arowana god for him to be better! any suggestion on how much more i can i do to get him better?
just keep the water as pristine clean as possible.. babies are fragile.. but if he is eating and and swimming normal then the only worry is infection.. just be on the lookout for any changes to his attitude or to the wound.. you would have to act quickly with meds.. but so far so very good.. all fingers and toes crossed for you...and baby.

Absolutely agree. Think how much money these medication companies make. Fix your water quality, up the changes, feed high quality and varied foods, reduced stress from other tankmates. Isn't it a no brainer? I bet the fish would repair just the same as with using meds or possibly quicker. Someone needs to research this and provide the medical evidence I think!

i totally agree also.. always use meds as a last resort... unless there is need to... water quality is the key to many problems and the better the water the faster the healing..
