I had my jardini for a little less than a year and we have gone through so much together. He had fin rot for a while but I cured it and he was fine for a good while. I bought him when he was about 6 inches and now he's almost 10 inches. He has had gill curl for about a couple months and I've been putting it off in fear of doing more damage. I've recently been feeding live feeders and live anole lizards. His tank is located outside in The shade. Recently it has been warm 82 during the day and cold 72 at night. I went outside the other day and he was swimming at an angle leaning towards the front of tank and his scales are now curlng out. I covered the tank with a sheet to block the light and he's swimmIng normal but at bottom of tank. I added about 10 tbsp of seasalt and the correct dosage of melafix. I called around asking for tetracycline but no one carries it. He is has not eaten since sunday night. Please help me.

Sounds like it has potruding scales disease. In your case caused by the temperature shock. 82-72 is way too much for your fish to handle in a 24hour period on a daily basis.
Having gill curl previously adds to diagnosing the problem is the temp in your tank.

Adding salt and melafix is ok. If you can use a proper antibiotic it's much better. You have to act quick. If the disease spreads to too far it can kill.
The most important thing for you to do now is to raise the temperature of the water over 86 degrees, and keep it stable while treating the fish. Once treatment has finished, your going to need to fix your heating situation in the tank. Stable temperature is the most important thing for you to maintain in your tank. Stable temperature is not allowing the temp to fluctuate in the tank more than 5 degrees F, and keeping it there(this includes water changes). Jardini's can handle temps down to 72 but it's not optimal. If the temps reach this low, it is normally over a period of weeks and months in their natural environment.

do you have a heater its not a good idea to have your tank outside imo also 4 inches in a year is not very much growth can i ask your tank size??

Thanks so much. So if the temperture outside of tank fluctuates and I get a thermomitor, how will I keep tank temp. Stable?

Oh God :uhoh:

You need some form of aquarium heating depending on size of your tank.
You live in Hawaii right ?. If so you get cooler windy nights which will drop tank temps down considerably.

Do you have an aquarium test kit ?
How do you water change ?

Your crazy havin a tank outside. You have had more problems on that tank then i ever had in my entire fish life. Do some research before you pick up a hobbie. Especially when you are dealing with live animals.

Take it easy man. Since when was it against the law to place a tank outside? Most ponds are outside, no? And it's not in direct sunlight, it's on the padio. If you don't have any useful advice with my jardinis sickness, beat it.

Ponds outside mostly consist of cold water fish like koi etc.
Jardini are an arowana, and unless your pond is located in S.E Asia, Northern Australia, Central America or Amazon region South America where the temperture is humid and has minimal fluctuation not a good idea to keep arowana if you want them to survive on a long term basis. Nothing wrong with your tank outside. It's just that you need some aquarium heaters to keep the tank up to stable temperature.
What size tank do you have ?

jardini is looking better.
yah recently it's been breezy.
uh, I use a syphon for water changes... Yes I have a test kit(water conditions are ideal)
What I meant to say is, is there heaters that switch on when the temp drops, and turn off when the temp gets to high? Like an automatic switch?

All aquarium heaters have a thermostat and temperature readout where you can dial in the temp, and the heater will try and keep it at that temperature. The heaters are submersible. They come in different watt sizes depending on the size of your tank. Because you have a good temperature fluctuation, you may need 2 or 3 x the heaters you normally do to keep it stable.

What is your tank size ?
