Carassius Carassius and Carassius Auratus are very similar. I however dont think that this one is a carassius carassius for two reasons,

#1) i cannot find any information showing that there are wild carassius carassius where this one was found, but i do know that there are wild carassius auratus in the system.

#2) Carassius Carassius have 33 or more scales on their lateral line; Carassius Auratus have 31 or less. I count 32 in my photo.

CC juveniles also have a black spot on the caudal peduncle, the CA does not.
I agree. They are very closely related. It's actually thought that C. auratus were selectively bred from C. c. I'm still sticking with my original ID, C. auratus

its just some feral wild looking goldfish.

Yea I think I found the article you were looking at, I guessed that becuase I was reading an article earlier about C. carassius and it looked just like it, they are closely related and resemble each other. Theres some good info here as well as some more morphological differences which can help identify each species http://www.iowas.co.uk/Goldfish.html

SCALE COUNTING!!!!!!

YOU GUYS ARE THE TRUTH~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really hate counting scales, but with some species (some of the redhorses come to mind), it's the only way to accurately identify species. I don't even want to think about how many redhorse scales I counted doing fish surveys this past summer
