the snake is from a hot climate area but why does mine like to soak in the water for long periods of time?

If you have hide areas in tank and room for the snake to move about without winding up in water than I cant fathom why it would soak. I prefer smaller water dished as kings can be prone to blisters if to wet.

The most I have ever had in 6 yrs has been snake 'hang out" next to water dish is shedding .

BTW yor temp should be fine for your Ca king as is.
I initially said you may need low watt heat pad as Ca kings like heat but stay as is esp since he is eating and looks good.

You must have some nice herps by you. Malaysia has some very interesting never seen for sale smallish type lizard eating snakes.

nice king you got there Louie... my king still loves to hang out in the water, can it be it's too hot and i wants to cool down?

Thanks.
If you have hide areas for it and it hangs out in water. Than it might be to hot.

However temps 82/83 degrees F during day for a Ca king arent hot .

The only problem with a Ca king in fact most snakes is that to much soaking it is possible for them to get blisters .
Other wise who cares if it likes the water as no big deal but some snakes will get blisters faster than others and arid enviroment snakes are one of them.

If it was my snake I wouldn't care a week or 2 of soaking but you don't want more than that.

Could substrate be annoying it?

You could try paper, towels, etc as substrate and see if he still soaks.

Hi Louie,
i just installed a thermometer in the tank lastnite and it reads 91!!! but i've added more hides for it now and at the moment it's sleeping under the driftwood and not in the water.

by the way, how often do we feed these kings? the shop owner said one mouse once a week.

91 day/night is warm. 91 after they eat is good for Ca kings (not all kings) but if you can add a cold pack like ice pack . As strange as that may sound isn't a bad idea.

You can lean it against the exterior side of tank and he will lean against the glass . Good thing you got a CA king and not a Mt king lol.

Than again with a Ca king you may not need it just watch if he soaks a lot than consider the ice pack unless temps drop a bit as weeks go by.

91 isnt terrible for a CA king but if he goes back into water than its bit to warm.

1 mouse a week is average some eat a mouse 7 to 10 days depending on mouse size and snake size.

I have a 3 yr old king that will only eat a hopper once every 2 weeks .

Ca kings are ravenous eaters compared to mt kings not to mention having held different kings IMO the strongest constrictor for their size.

Ca kings like most kings sometimes show no interest in food during winter regardless of temp so keep that in mind but it varies from snake to snake.

thanks for the info again, i really really really appreciate it. i know i should have done my research before getting a snake but i just needed to get it when i saw it in the petshop last week...

wait guys Im pretty sure it is an american python, I catch those here in my village all the time,,oh wait,,no I dont,,,because even though I live where thier are tons of snake species I can hunt for days and never see a single freakin one. Yeah cal kings are real cool, yours looks great, sad gecko though, best thing for snake noobs is to learn scientific names but hey crap happens when you get excited. Now what would be real funny is if the white bands started rubbing off and you discovered an illegal indigo trade going on lol.
