i was wondering if i could put my two 8" common plecos with my 4 3" serrasalmus spilopleus? i have the tank set up pretty good allowing fora great common pleco and piranha hiding spot, so there won't be very much compotition.
If you dont love your pleco's sure go for it. But its fins are probably going to be nipped starting from the pleco's tail and then foward. Nip, NIp, NIP.....
sure you can as long as the filters can keep up (plecos are poop machines) and you keep both species well fed so the plecos won't suck on those small piranhas.
also, you sure you have serrasalmus spilopleura and not serrasalmus maculatus or serrasalmus sanchezi? I never seen true spilopleura available at such small size
they are significantly larger then the piranhas, i haven't gotten them yet, i am asking ahead of time to make sure that i can keep the plecos in the tank or if i should move them.
Meat eating Trinadad Plecos = Bloat. Trinadads need to be supplimented with ample portions of vegatation or algae waffers for dietry tract health. One of the exceptions would be Vampire plec's that eat crustaceans. Hopfully that young Trinadad in the video is well supplimented. It was a cool video Thanks!. And I agree with the - watch out for large Plecos attacking the P's as well - they can suck off the slime coat if pissed off or starving.
I remember that vid. Very brave pleco considering it's exposing his soft belly. Mine will swim around the tank but not through the pack like the one in the video.
From the research I've done, most pleco success story seemed to have one thing in common. The pleco and Ps grew up together as oppose to dropping a new fish into established terriotories. I've seen some rather gruesome pics of plecos with their bellies eaten out. So best of luck with whatever route you decide
