Thats a really cool idea. Have you though about switching pumps to one of the dc models ? Jebao pumps arent too expensive. It may allow you a little more flexibility in finding that sweet spot (gph)

What type of heater will work in 3" of water? Maybe go with an inline? It's a cool looking idea, kind of a wooden HOB, on top.
I would have built this out of plastic instead of wood for many reasons.
But it is what it is, and it is very interesting. Maybe filtration and circulation can be two different functions.
Maybe add a second circulation pump that does nothing but operate your waterfall, or increase the flow and run a considerable amount of it through a bypass tube directly to the waterfall From Below.
Anyhow this is such a neat idea I kind of want to steal it for my outdoor Aquarium.
How many sweet potatoes do you think I could get in that thing? No foam or floss
. . . just lots and lots of roots.

To get the perfect sheet of water off the return it needs to be dead level and the water flow would need to approach the ramp evenly .
I doubt that the perfect full cascade is possible with the water returning from both sides or even one side. It will always go off the ramp from the corner as soon as it makes the turn.
On second thought if there was a lip on the ramp to create a place for water to fill up level and then run over the side it could work. Or is that what you’ve done? I cant tell from the photo.
