THis is rediculous, appalling and and very dissapointing. Did this officer pay ANY attention during training? Look, I wasn't there and Im not one to Monday Quarterback Police officers In general because I know how much the Media likes to spin things around on PO's. Same thing they do with Pit bulls, well theres a whole other level when it comes to Police, but this seems pretty cut and Dry. This Officer obviously had a huge lack of judgement for the situation, and while I am sure he didn't realize what his actions could cause, that won't bring back this little boy to his family. If the Snake was simply in the tree and not an emminent danger all they had to do was keep an eye on it and wait for Animal control. I can assure you that one of the main things they teach in the academy is judgement and decision making when dealing with your firearm. It is continuely drilled in to your head, Gun is last resort for almost everything. I don't think the officer deserves life in prison, but he definitely should be taken off the streets, do a little time. Its sad that an incident like this is what it probably takes for some police dept to continuesly re-train their officers. Mistakes like that arent supposed to happen....period. My sympathies go out to the family as this must be an extremely difficult time, and in hind sight to the officer himself...while I think he should live with this guilt, it was still a mistake and a costly one...may he be tried fairly.
Also, FYI He has a stiffer penalty awaiting him regardless,....PO's usually have 5 yrs added to most crimes they are to commit for simply being a PO...(atleast in FL).
