I have some P. Polli that I've moved between my grayish silica sand and my black sand. The Polli got really dark. Almost can't see their body pattern anymore.
you right, I read that the Japanese say you mix on a ratio of 80/20, garnet/black. That's why I'm thinking on adding about 11 lbs of black sand to my garnet sand
i have a 12"ornate and a 12" endli. their both on a natural color substrate. the substrate size is a little larger than sand, but alot smaller than gravel though i would probably call it gravel. they both show great color so i havent tried the black/red mix. the endli has some of the darkest markings i'v ever seen, so i would like to see the difference if he were on the mixed color substrate.
I was thinking of adding some black silica sand to my mix; however, during my research i stumbled upon, what i believe, the PERFECT SUBSTRATE FOR POLYPTERUS: 16-24 GRADE MOHAWK CRUSHED GARNET. The reason why i believe it is the best for polypterus: 1) You don't waste time mixing CGS and BSS (Black
Silica Sand) trying to get the best blend for your polys. 2) Washing is very easy, comes clean after two rinses. 3) Super Heavy, will not get picked up by filter. 4) No sharp edges like Tahitain moon sand (Crushed Obsidian) that will shred you Poly's gills and stomach if ingested. Feast your eyes upon the video and the photos and tell me whether you agree or disagree with me.
DRY
WET- Notice the dark garnet looks black eliminating the need for the BSS
