Polypterus endlicheri photo thread

But what i thought that tinkinso and dabola are the same ist just a name for them, farannah and guinea are the same too right? Its just the name are differnt but same species?
Somewhat yes. Tinkisso is a river and dabola is a town/area (as is faranah). Since the Tinkisso river runs through or near Dabola any fish caught from the the tinkisso river in dabola would be (for example endlicheri) Polypterus endlicheri sp. Dabola (tinkisso river). However there can be endlies caught from the tinkisso not in the Dabola area and can be labeled just tinkisso endlies (as far as I know). As far as faranah and guinea they are also somewhat the same. Faranah is an area/town and anything caught near it can be labeled (again endlicheri for example) Polypterus Endlicheri sp. Faranah. As far as Guinea, all of these locals are in Guinea plus many others so you could basically tack Guinea onto the end of almost all the sp. names (Koliba, Koloton, Dabola, tinkisso, milo, faranah, etc..,).

Thank Dr.B, that explanation is more clear.:)

"jaws7777, post: 7551750, member: 121129"]I really wish we could get a clear picture on the different species/locations

**** I know this is meant for Dr. B. He'll definitely include his great insights and knowledge on this topic. Cuz there's a lot... But let me include what I know or my opinions based on my research. Please let me know if I'm incorrect. Always eager to learn.

So sp. Dabola and lapen are probably the same thing ?

**** WC Lapen is suppose to be nicer quality than the captive bred nigerian lap x endli. This is suppose to carry visual traits similar to the two I posted in page 6. Apparently there is suppose to be several types of known wild caught lapen. Not much info is provided on the differences

**** sp. Dabola seems to have several types of the way they are suppose to look, or at least the way they were labeled to be marketed. Some say they are a natural hybridization between a Guinean Lap and endli. No scientific data has confirmed it's their own species yet, nor will it ever happen anytime soon.

*** just to show differences. Included these pics to assist others. Guinean Lap(pic 3) or Tinkisso Guinean Lap(deeper markings(pic 4), Koliba & Koloton(pic 5)

**** Not to confuse even more on Dabolas. There's also a label under Faranah Dabola Type, but Toyin the Genius he is. Doesn't want to confuse us all and just labels under the marketing name Faranah 'full' and 'broken' stripes. Not sure which one I have but included photo of mine (pic 6).

You ever notice a difference on the faranah and dabola endlis ?

**** Faranah have a much wider flatter heads. Which slightly tapers to the front. Dabola headshape broad and in between a volta(slender head) and faranah. This is my opinion. It could be different with another person.

Dabola and tinkinso are the same fish im thinking

*** If your referencing Endli. Then yes it's the same. Tinkinso is a river that flows through Dabola region/prefecture. Both names are referenced in Toyins' list as one.

I think the 2 things that are fueling the confusion are the questions of genetic similarities/differences between the different variants, and the uncertainty of the placement in the Polypterus market of the fish caught in Dabola. Until those questions are answered by scientific data we can only speculate using the specimens we currently have in captivity and observe the similarities and differences ourselves as we try to distinguish different traits between the various catch locations. I'll admit that looking at pictures of other bichir keepers' fish and comparing them to my own I even see differences between the same variants, which doesn't help in the overall assessment and distinguishment of the variants. However one thing I think we can all agree on is that if you line up all the variants and observe them side by side, they will all look different from each other. Weather it's color tone, patterns, or body/head shape, there's differences.

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 , The endli are looking great! Really looking forward to the picture updates as these grow out. Will be cool to see the difference in the Volta, Faranah, Dabola (Tinkisso) and the captive born too. And since you have two of each, a really good representation for sure.

I realized I have not had any updated pics of my endli, will have to work on that.
