Pond Finally dug!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bottom drain, skimmer or both?

Are you going to dig the bottom (lowest point) shelf wider?

Do you have the filter or DIY?

How many gal. is the bog going to be?

Is the bog in the notched groove from the corner of the fence into the pond?

Thing of the bog as a seperate pond above the main pond. Water from the filter/bio-falls will dump into a shallow pond crammed with plants of all sorts. Once it fills w/water in then dumpes into the main pond. This will create a couple of different falls along the way to filter and oxygenate the water.

Fish - Whatever you want to heat.

Muske,

I did dig out the bottom shelf more today, and its going to be a bottom drain.
As for filter, Im not sure yet, I have read alot of your post and would appriciate your adivce on this. Never built my own and not too sure what everthing would entail for it.
The bog, im guessing around 250-350 gallons, maybe a bit bigger, but not too sure.
As for the bog, im putting up a retaining wall at the bottom where I dug it out. Going to raise it about 36" to 40" so it has a good ways to fall and airate the water more (i think, right?). And yes, It will be crammed with plants.
Fish....Im not heating this pond, so....I was thinking maybe a few pacu and a rtc (since the pacu would get too wide for his mouth, and they will have a head start in the pond). How well do pacu do with, say, chiclides or koi? I want BIG fish in here, or atleast a few big ones and some smaller ones....What do you think?

With a bottom drain get some 55gal. barrels for a vortex, 1 for mechancial, and a bio-filter. There are several manufactures that make filtration systems that run with the BD.

IDK about the Pacs and RTC w/o heat. Koi for sure, any natives, channel cats will thrive and get large and in charge...

Thanks for the info! Ill keep you updated Thanks again Muske!

No problem....

My pond is a hockey rink so I need someones to dabble with.

If you are set on the BD I would look at some Koi sites for better tech. info. I am more of a water gardener than koi pond guy. I have experience with them, but I am more geared to natural enviroments with all the mechiancals hiding form view.

Ok, noob question....Whats BD?

Bottom Drain

i dont know how hot it stays where you live, but if the water temp stayed atleast 73-74* you could have pacu living in there, along with many of the hardier cichlids and many catfish that wont mind a slightly lower temp.
