Pond Finally dug!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The crays wont hurt a thing. If there are cichlids, the crays will be eaten. My cichlids peck at them untill they tear them to bits, or my jag just eats them whole. JD's in a pond would look awsome, and maybe even some Pbass.

Id keep all US natives. Sometimes freak weather can happen and could cool down your pond too much and possibly kill any tropical fish you would spend money on to just lose. I would do blue gill, pumpkin seed, redear, white bass or striped bass(I forgot which one is smaller), madtoms, fathead minnows, channel cat( can be trained to be hand fed) etc. And Rusty Crays get to an OK size and might avoid being eaten

What he said! + most if not all of the above can be caught locally. If you ensure there are plenty of places for the crays to hide, they're less likely to try digging into the liner. I have a bunch of cherax quads for free if want to make the drive to San Diego.

Thanks you guys! I guess I know what I got to do now, lol. I would love to take you up on your offer Pinoyfisher, got a few Pinoy boys I was in the army with that I need to visit, we shall see! :naughty:

As long as there fed only a few fish would probably die a year. the crayfish prefer to eat dead things than live. the crays eat uneaten food and anyhing that dies. And if a good pond snail population develops they will have a constant supply of snails. In an aquarium, the chances of a cray eating a fish is a lot higher tough

Thanks for the info FF!! I think im going to do koi, plecos, snails and crawfish (the last 2 was thinking about, but thanks to you, im def. going to do it!) I think this should be nice to look at while I have the clean up crew doing thier job.

Could I keep any turtle with those guys? thinking like a soft shell turtle or best to leave them alone?

Soft shells are one of the fastest swimming turtles and need a lot of space to swim. Anyways softshells are fully aquatic and almost only come out to breed or take a breath, Every once and a while you might see it bask. I cant think of any type of turtle right now that wouldnt wipe out your crayfish population. I would start the set up with about 10 ramshorn snails and 10 pond snails and keep them in there for a week, Then the crays, then the plecos and koi. My petstore used to give me there ramshorn snails for free. Try checking petstores that have a snail infestation(not apple snails) and ask if you can have them.
