Pool Filter Sand is terrible...OFFICIAL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
calm down, only thing making it look ugly is the lack of good decor, those awful lights and that hideous background. sorry, i'm brutally honest sometimes

Never used pfs but lots of good reviews. I've only used play sand and it works well. No cloudy was whatsoever

I have playsand in a different tank. I like it but id never use it with big fish. Sandstorm anyone? Was a lot dirtier too. OP... patience is the key, it will clear, just maybe not as quick as you'd like. Maybe add extra mech filtration till it does. Maybe if you deliberately stir it up yourself it will 'clean' quicker. Your tank looks better for having the sand. Of course, I know that's opinion and many like the bare bottom look (insert rude comment here) but I think if you persevere you'll be happy in the long run. I know when mine was going through it's cloudy stage I hated looking at it, but now all is good (apart from my oscar thinking it is his duty to crush pellets and pollute the tank with the crumbs!)

I'll throw in yet another comment in vouching that I used PFS a lot without any issues. Does this look murky to you?

One thing to consider though is that "pool filter sand" isn't a regulated resources - it's just sand, which means that it's going to vary from region to region depending on what's available. I notice that you're from Australia, whereas most of us who have had positive experiences are from the US. I expect that the PFS available to you there is different.

Where did you get that tank?!?

I agree, it took awhile to clean, but it was worth it, when my fish go from calm to "go, go, go", there is a little puff of sand that comes up, and settles within seconds, no clouds what so ever,
I love it,
I also bought mine from a local pool store it was quickrete brand, but still labeled pool filter sand. I love it.
It was about $25/50lb bag(gotta love hawaii)

I go to my local hardware store and buy coarse silica sand. I can get 100 lbs. for $11. I love the stuff so much better than gravel. It took me about 45 minutes to clean all 100 lbs. Now if I could just get my green terror to quit covering all my driftwood and rocks with it it would be great LOL.
