It's just aggression, and the jag isn't big enough to be sexually mature yet.

Oh? The jag is definately big enough to breed at 7". But like the others said, sounds more like aggression to me.

like everyone else said agression.
i just saw a very long lip lock battle today when the jag decided to lay eggs (with no male be w.e.) again and the oscar went to eat them, so i wouldnt get your hopes up.

yeh i doubt its breeding more than likely aggrression te oscar and jag in my dads tank just constatly beat the crap out of each other, baring in mind the oscar is about 4" biggger lol!

Yes, this is just a squabble. I have had Jags breed at 2 inches. Not sure where Wyld got that it wasn't mature yet.
Sorry - this hybrid would have been quite crazy!

Generally cichlids don't become sexually mature enough to breed until they are at least 1/2 of their full grown size. Your 2 inch breeding sounds like a big sham. A fish that attains an adult size of 22" is far from sexually mature at 7" let alone 2". Eggs can be laid at young ages in several cichlids, however, they are not viable. This is a form of "warm ups" for the future mother. This behavior can be seen in cichlids even when the female is alone (often seen in discus and angels).

A big sham... LOL

At 2 inches my pair had fry. Of course it's hard to believe, but I have no reason to lie. It was interesting, though, that the pair never grew past 6 and 8 inches (female/male respectively)

On the other side of the range, I've never had Oscars lay until they were fully sized - 10-14 inches and several years old.

I've read and seen several reports of pairs of Jags, Red Devils, and other large cichlids breeding at 6".
