Generally cichlids don't become sexually mature enough to breed until they are at least 1/2 of their full grown size. Your 2 inch breeding sounds like a big sham. A fish that attains an adult size of 22" is far from sexually mature at 7" let alone 2". Eggs can be laid at young ages in several cichlids, however, they are not viable. This is a form of "warm ups" for the future mother.
