Astronotus + Cichlasoma = No.

Jags aren't Cichlasoma...at least not anymore.

They may try to breed given the lack of reproductive options but no actual offspring will be produced. Miles is right, they cannot cross.

Generally cichlids don't become sexually mature enough to breed until they are at least 1/2 of their full grown size. Your 2 inch breeding sounds like a big sham. A fish that attains an adult size of 22" is far from sexually mature at 7" let alone 2". Eggs can be laid at young ages in several cichlids, however, they are not viable. This is a form of "warm ups" for the future mother. This behavior can be seen in cichlids even when the female is alone (often seen in discus and angels).

I would not base a cichlid's ready-ness to breed based on size but rather age. It seems most cichlids reach sexual maturity at a year of age regardless of size, stunted fish can still breed. I don't see Santoury as a lier though I would think that a 2" jag would be quite young.

I've read and seen several reports of pairs of Jags, Red Devils, and other large cichlids breeding at 6".
I've seen reports, but never actual proof of jags breeding as small as 6" when they are kept in proper housing their entire lives.

The wild jags here in South FL start breeding as small as 5" from what ive seen....

i've seen accually 3-4" even

Yep, they do start very early.. it would be a pretty wild mix!

I had a pair of GT's spawn at like 2-3".. The eggs were eaten though.

I was amazed when it happened, because I thought I was years away.. I could never get them to re-spawn again, and they got beat up. :(

My Paratilapia are in the 5-6" range and they are spawning..

but yeah... there is a reason we see no Oscar hybrids!! Astronotus...
