Possible job at petsmart (lol)

i say you do it. i used to work for petco as an aquatic life specialist. that store needed someone with knowledge in the fish hobby badly. the fish deserve someone that can keep them in good condition until they go to a loving home. the customers that the larger chain stores get usually aren't too fish savvy either so they need to be taught well. i was surprised with that i formed strong bonds with many customers and they always came back even though i would recommend LFS's in the area if my store didn't have what they were looking for... good customer service and care for the animals really paid off. in all honesty, i miss my petco job.

They don't hire until 17-18, the pay sucks to start and you don't get to just hang around the fish wall and tell people what you feel like telling them. There are rules and guidelines that must be adhered to. And as people can't seem to grasp, working in the "fish department" isn't just that. You have to deal with customer questions and problems about birds, reptiles, amphibians and small and furry. You will also spend alot of your time cleaning bird and rat crap off the cages and cleaning tanks so much you won't want to look at yours when you get home. Loads of glamour. Have fun with that if you get hired.

I'm only sixteen, and caring for petsmart fish is the only occupation that wouldn't drive me to insanity until i can get to college.

Anyone here who worked/works for petsmart have any advice?

Mainly like, how hard is it?... how young will they hire? good pay?

I'll probably just hang out around the fish wall and help people, fudge with the filters and whatnot, I've already found myself correcting some of the employees there about fish related stuff

Thanks.
Lol... You gotta love correcting the employees. I like to walk up to the misinformed people and teach them about the fish:D

Teaching customers about fish gets old real fast.

They will abuse you as a resource, not do any research of thier own, do what they want anyway, and then blame you for everything that goes wrong. Don't get me wrong, you'll likely get many "good customers" but the others can be very taxing.

And this will happen daily.

go somewhere else where you can make more bucks and buy more fish. petsmart is basically walmart, no sense in working for such a soulless place.

Absolutely untrue. We don't hire old people to stand at door and say welcome.

you don't have a ton of options at 16. I'd say go for it. The money isn't horrible for a teenager and the dicount is handy. Don't assume that you will be working with the fish right away though. It may happen, just depends on what openings they have. I suggest you take what is available (if it is even offered to you) and work your way over to fish care. Good luck!

okay there is one difference then, sorry.

But seriously don't work there to better the hobby, places like that are destroying it, I would not support them in any way shape or form, working for them is supporting them.

I really don't see how they are destroying the hobby. Please explain.
